VPN Megathread - January 2025

did you stay in a relatively high-end international chain, or otherwise in a hotel that has western satellite TV (e.g. BBC, CNN) available?

Used astrill in U.K. and China. Worked well in both countries. Stealth mode in China.

What are your issues? Which servers?

I read a lot of stories about LetsVPN randomly cancelling your VPN after certain amount of bandwidth has been used, is that true?

OK this is going to be a silly question but I have not been back in like 8 years… With letsVPN, if I download it before I go, can I wait until I get there to pay or will their website also be blocked?

1st of all, is your china mobile sim plan 4g/5g? Second of all, where are you in China?

I’ve noticed that my china mobile 4g only plan is super spotty where my china mobile 4g/5g plan is super smooth while in shanghai.

Let’s VPN and Xiyou worked for me.

I’ve not had any problems with it in terms of sensitive data but I can say it’s the only vpn that has actually worked for me. It’s really good and if u have premium u can switch location and it’s the only vpn I’ve tried that actually works in terms of streaming platforms like Netflix switching to different locations. One thing I’ll say is that it does eat through a lotttt of data, but maybe that’s just me.

I’ve used my banking apps with an authenticator on LetsVPN network with no issue. You shouldn’t be worried about them because banking apps encrypt your data and connection to the app servers.

I have Mullvad VPN, Astrill, and LetsVPN (all with subscriptions). LetsVPN is the most stable and fast for me so far. And as of right, it’s the only one working fine as the other two won’t connect.

I would check with her company first. In the US, I haven’t heard of anyone who was able to work in China if they needed VPN access, either due to logistics or the company’s own concerns. Even companies who would typically allow remote work would restrict that policy to exclude China.

What do you mean? You have to use a VPN or proxy for those streaming services to work.

Use a shadowsocks proxy with Clash Verge Rev or Hiddify.

May I know what’s your setup? thanks in advance

any update bro? I will arrive on 16

it was the Shangri La Shenzhen, but it was a “manual” setting that had to be requested by the front desk.

What happened was, I was at the front desk checking in

And the front desk agent was trying to get me to sign up for the hotel’s loyalty program (ShangriLa Circle - I guess they get special credit if they sign up more guests)

Signing up for this loyalty program required verification with my email address. I had a gmail email address.
So when I was logged into the hotel wifi with my room number as the login, I could not access my gmail, so I could not register.

Realizing this, he picked up his cell and made a quick call, said a few words, and then, a minute later, I was able to access my gmail, through my room number login via wifi. This of course worked in the room too, since that’s how we accessed the wifi. But it was only for our room, since it wasn’t working before he made the call. HTH

To be fair I haven’t tried all servers but I’m mainly trying to connect to any US servers from the UK to Disney plus through Astril. It basically seems that Astril has a tough time getting through Disney’s anti-vpn system and that this is less of an Astril problem and more of a Disney issue, so Astril seems to be what I’ll stick with, though I am also going to get a Let’s VPN account.

I believe so. This probably happens when the bot thinks you are using an usually large amount of bandwidth.

The website will be blocked.

But, you can install first and then buy it as it is hosted on a local IP (I believe)

Thanks for the reply. Yep 5G and in Shenzhen (and also all over the north of the country from Harbin down to Xian)

To solve the problem I’ve moved my Sim into an old iPhone 12 I have and I hotspot all day to my Pixel.

iPhone gets pretty steady 5G and doesn’t need to hunt for signal a lot so the battery lasts ok and my Pixel battery last a long time because it’s just using wifi with cellular service turned off.
