Does anyone know a specific reason as to why Spectrum requires users to connect to their in-home Spectrum internet service in order to stream certain channels on the Spectrum TV app or website?
Because they’re only licensed to stream in the location of your home network so you won’t be able to access them remotely
Set up a VPN server on your router. The app will block on mobile if VPN is enabled, but you can use on other devices or through a client router. I did it for years until my in-laws dumped Spectrum TV last year.
Go to YouTubeTV — Spectrum still doesn’t have licensing for many channels outside of the home, or if they do then they’re purposefully blocking channels such as locals, RSNs, and some national sports networks to prevent password sharing.
I don’t know why Spectrum drags their feet on this, but YouTubeTV has no restrictions on which channels you can view inside or outside of the home. It’s also unlimited DVR.
Check to see if the channel has an app or website with a livestream. Often the channel app will work with your spectrum credentials.
It forces you to use their Internet if you want all the channels you pay for. They do this with mobile service as well. Can’t get their mobile if you aren’t a Spectrum Internet customer. It’s all an attempt to lock you in to more services that makes you a more “sticky” customer and less likely to cancel as they gradually increase your rates with notifying you. Bundles suck. Spectrum does too…pretty much. I hate their business model. So exploitative.
Because Spectrum sucks.
I need that info but for dummies
I’ve also had success with turning on the vpn while already in the app as it seems to only check for it when it first opens up. Not sure if they’ve closed that loophole now or not since it’s been a bit since I’ve tried that…
I would go with YouTube TV or Hulu TV too. However, there are local channels that my family watches regularly that we are unable to obtain through a TV antenna. YouTube and Hulu only carry a few local channels, and the channels my family watches are not one of them.
Honestly I don’t think spectrum drags their feet on it anymore. Over the last few years probably in response to things the youtube tv the vast majority of channels are now available outside the home.
I’m able to stream most channels, such as Lifetime, Hallmark, HGTV, C-SPAN, news networks, and others on any internet connection without any further issues. It’s that streaming the local channels requires a Spectrum home internet connection.
That’s what I figured. I miss Time Warner Cable because their principles are to do whatever it takes to keep the customer. Every time I called TWC customer service, the customer service representative would say “Thank you for being a customer for XX years” at the end of each call. TWC would also periodically upgrade your internet speeds at no extra charge. Spectrum has not upgraded my internet speeds at all since the acquisition, besides bumping me up from 50 Mbps to 60 Mbps internet, while offering new customers 200 Mbps for less.
Spectrum has changed that philosophy. The customers are of the least importance to them. I’ve already had customer service reprentatives upselling me on unnecessary crap even though I simply want to reschedule my service installation date!!!
It didn’t work in iOS whenever I tried.
Here’s mainly what isn’t available in the spectrum app outside the home based on my tv silver package last time I checked besides a few shopping networks
Some Locals depending on market (the android app has nbc and abc if you enable location where I am)
Ion
Fuse
Sny
Yes
Newsnation
Daystar
Nyslc
Sbn
Reelz
Hi
Mlb tv
Nba tv
Univision
Telemundo
Some.of those channels can still be watched anywhere on that channels individual app with your spectrum login (reels definitely can be, newsnation definitely cannot, don’t know the rest), just not in the spectrum app.
If YouTube TV and Hulu TV had all of the local channels that Spectrum are able to broadcast, then I’d switch to either one in a heartbeat.
Make sure you are calling the retention line. Calling sales will get you nowhere.
Ahh k. Ya they probably closed that one then
I’d check them out then. I’m betting at least youtube tv might have all the locals.
I’ve read up on how some representatives will have their ways to hold you back from reaching out to retentions. If you reached out to retention, how did you manage to reach out to them and how did it go?
