AirVPN vs ProtonVPN (or Mullvad?) - Which is better? (both are on sale for Black Friday!)

Does anybody have any recommendation on AirVPN vs ProtonVPN? (or Mullvad?)

AirVPN and ProtonVPN are both on sale for Black Friday and both support port forwarding which is better for torrents, right? (does this only affect seeding or also leeching?)

ProtonVPN looks a bit more professional (?) and seems to be recommended by some magazines, etc.

I’ve always used Mulled and they seem to be most highly recommended (?) except for torrenting now since they removed port forwarding. They are also the most expensive at this moment due to no Black Friday sales.

EDIT: Woah, never mind … It looks like ProtonVPN Black Friday deal requires a 30-month subscription (geez!)

I’m currently using Airvpn, so stable and fast for torrenting, the only two downsides in my opinion are having very limited servers and locations and not having streaming servers like Cyberghost. And maybe having to solve many capchas is also a downside, but still totally recommended

Airvpn isnt terribly fast, but has several features that are really helpful to have around, especially when torrenting. Namely port forwarding and dynamic dns.

I was using mullvad. After they disabled PF, it became hard to download rare torrents. Common ones are fine. Since most of the torrents I care about are not that common, I switched to AirVPN.

AirVPN required a bit of hands-on work, as their GUI client is useless - hangs, freezes etc. If you are OK with command line, go for it.

I use MullVad. Can be slow, but it’s cheap, reliable and is privacy-oriented.

They are good providers but cost is the difference. AirVPN has been excellent for port forwarding purposes.

I use airvpn and i am satisfied. Speeds with wireguard are really good. Only thing missing is app based split tunneling. They are working on it but not yet available. But even without that, i can watch my plex server remotely.

Using AirVPN from last year and so far solid. Had to spend some time at the start to identify the server best suited for me (gives me best speed) and since then, didn’t have to look at it. I only use it for Port Forwarding in qBitTorrent client.

AirVPN user here for a few years. No problems. Eddie client seems fine to me. Having 20 port forwards is nice. Have to sign up for a long sub to get a good deal with AirVPN.

Correction: Looks like only 5 ports now for new customers. Thanks for the correction u/toxictenement.

I use Proton VPN, never have an issue, I think it’s great. It’s also the only one I would trust along side Mullvad.

Since there’s only really 2 VPNs worth recommending, this topic keeps getting easier to discuss lol. As always, the motherpost https://www.reddit.com/r/VPNTorrents/comments/rikthc/list_of_recommended_vpns_2022/ so you can read the reasons.

IMO, AirVPN is best if you now more what you’re doing, because their client sucks. But for me, I use gluetun, so it’s not a problem. If you want more of a click and forget experience, go Proton.

switched to airvpn a few months ago. as long as u use a wireguard config with a server that does 20000 mbps youll be fine. i think its super fast and i have had no problems whatsoever since switching.

I use AirVPN and it is installed at router level. I use WG and can hit speeds upto 500Mbps when torrenting. Speedtest gives me a bit more bump up to 700Mbps but I’m happy with my speed.

you should check out PrivadoVPN too. it has fast speeds, unlimited bandwidth, and a strict no-logs policy. Plus, you can get a great deal right now: 30$ for 27 months. That’s less than 2$ per month!

I was on Mullvad until they dropped port forwarding. Then I got a multi-year deal with AirVPN on their last black Friday sale, I think last year. It has been great. Reliable, fast, free of any drama. And cheap, much cheaper than Mullvad. Totally worth it.

Some people do report the AirVPN GUI client is buggy, but I only use it with DelugeVPN on Unraid. Once you get the wireguard working you can forget about it completely.

I just purchased AirVPN. My default download speed is +700 Mbps, but I was never to achieve that with AirVPN.

Just adding to this, I’ve been using AirVPN for basically a year after switching off Mullvad since they killed port forwarding, couldn’t be happier, along the downsides listed above, they do also have some servers with a pretty limiting speed.

I have 1Gbps, and can’t really saturated 100% of it, maybe 50% at peak times and 70% at some really unique scenarios, but still, really good and cheaper than Proton

No need for CLI, just use WireGuard native client app like mostly everybody else using AirVPN

Sorry. What does port forwarding do for the not so common torrents. Or what does of do in general.
