X (Twitter) and CloudFlare in Brazil

The social network X (formerly Twitter) was blocked in Brazil following orders from Supreme Federal Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. This action was taken after Elon Musk failed to comply with judicial orders, which included appointing a legal representative in Brazil and providing personal information of users.

After several weeks of being blocked, the platform was partially reactivated in Brazil through a technical maneuver. The company switched its infrastructure to use Cloudflare services, which provides protection and acceleration for websites through a reverse proxy. This change made it more difficult for Brazilian operators to block the platform because Cloudflare uses dynamic IPs shared with other essential services, such as banks and government platforms. Blocking Cloudflare would significantly impact Brazil’s digital infrastructure, potentially causing an internet “blackout” in the country.

This situation highlights the legal and technical strategies used by large companies to circumvent governmental restrictions and the challenges these actions pose to regulatory authorities.

Didnt realise twitter uses cloudflare. Does anyone know if its just a DNS block, or have they blocked the ips that Twitter happens to have

Ah, I see. So people are on the side of the governments here, limiting speech? Is this because people hate Elon Musk, free speech, or both?

which included appointing a legal representative in Brazil and providing personal information of users

Partially yes, but it’s important to stress that there’s an ongoing investigation on people involved in the January 8th coup attempt in Brasilia (very much like the 1/6 in the US). The Brazilian judge requested a few accounts (about 20 if I’m not mistaken) to be suspended during the investigation, which Musk explicitly and publicly declared they wouldn’t comply.

I hope this puts an end to the blockade. The Judge who ordered the blockade has even put a ~$10.000 fine per day to any brazillian that tries to access X (formerly Twitter) behind a VPN. Yeah, he can try to ask ISPs to block Twitter, but going as far as punishing users who have nothing to do with it, just why?

If they block CloudFlare as a whole Brazil will be in fact a dictatorship.

In short: CloudFlare accepts illegal orders. The news has already come out that CloudFlare is already in contact with Brazilian authorities and they will block X.

So, issue an international arrest warrant. Interpol still cares a bit about crimes.

Brazil is a sovereign nation and has a right to enforce duly passed laws and judgments.

Wait until Elon Musk finds out about Kiwifarms and how Josh Null Moon found out how to make his own DNS block, his own server, his own website, his own network, and bypasssing all IPS blockage that countries and IPS provider try to block.

Honestly, this is just ABRINT trying to claim “see, we’ve done all we can, it’s just too hard”. Any modern ISP can block by SNI, and ECH hasn’t been re-enabled on Cloudflare side. Of course, DPI avoidance tool on client-side that tweak the SNI just enough to evade SNI filtering without any server-side change are also very easy to setup.

exellent news ! This is how companies and technologies should help avoid non-sense gov “ideas”

Nation State 2 : 0 Perma-High, Sociopathic Oligarch *

(* - Musk really is that man-sized toddler who’s waving around the [proverbial] loaded gun at anyone interrupting his drugg-addled romp across the planet.)

I have stopped using Warp in protest for CloudFlare’s complicity in allowing X to circumvent the justice system of a democratic country. Everyone is obliged to follow the laws, even big multinational corporations and the oligarchs who run them. This is a further example of how extreme concentration of wealth undermines democracy.

Twitter started using CloudFlare recently. Before they used their own hosting IP, which was blocked in Brazil.

I am on freedom (X / Musk) here

Putting this in terms of “free speech” vs “communism”… well, it’s just not that simple.

But you all are probably not ready for this conversation.

In the same way that “Eminem” cannot say “Shake that ass for me” on the radio, in Brazil there are also laws (including, in Brazil, Eminem could say “ass” “fuck”, or any other swear word directly on the radio, at any time). In Brazil there is freedom of speech, however, racism, for example, is prohibited, for Twitter to return, they just have to follow the laws, and everything is fine, simple.

The majority of the Brazilian people is on the side of freedom of expression. Those who are in favor of the X blockade are the communists who hate the country.

the goverment is not limiting any fing speech, twitter refused to take down accounts of people that commited actual crimes it has nothing to do with the stupid american culture war

Hate Speech and digitally modified Political Attack ads using A.I are abounds on X, the X Policy banning such ads only applies if the video targets Dementia Don.

Good that it’s banned.

CloudFlare is usually pretty cooperative in cases like this, as far as I know and it’s highly doubtful they’d even have problems with them to have to go such lengths

And fortunately, a “dictatorship” is far from happening lol

The fine does suck, but it’s clearly just a scare tactic. Ironically, the people the ones behind the decision wanted gone off Twitter are the ones who remained there using VPN before this and nothing has happened to them this entire time
