I want to go work in Peru. I planned on setting up a home VPN server using a Raspberry Pi in order to connect to it from Peru using a VPN router, but I’m wondering if that’s just an extra step. Can a router just act as a VPN server? Can I just get two VPN routers, leave one at home and connect to my home network from Peru with my other VPN router? My employer won’t know so it needs to look like I’m in the U.S. I was going to buy the Gl.iNet travel router and use wireguard.

Yes you can. I found this out after spending a bunch of time learning everything about pivpn and wireguard and programming 3 pis from scratch.
I currently also have a Flint setup as a VPN server. One benefit to the pi is that it’s easy to remote into it and check on the status of it or update your firmware.
Make sure you have some redundancy, a second one at a friends house or something just in case.
Hi mate, I can recommend KeepYourHomeIP.com they did the VPN setup for me and I can say they are great. Working from Colombia time to time and my travel router connects to my home VPN server. So far never had any issues! Also important to say these guys are very technical and will give you all the tips to be on the safe side when working from abroad.
