I’ve been reading a lot of postings about issues with using various VPNs on Gold. (I have issues myself with NordVPN.) All of this got me to wondering as to why use one at all, considering the superb security on the Gold? It seems like DoH is enough. Thoughts?
First, VPN doesn’t always mean security … VPN is simply hiding your traffic from your service providers, and not from the VPN provider and the website/service provider.
The same for DoH feature, it hides DNS requests from your service provider, but does not hide it from the DNS provider.
VPN can be useful if you VPN into your work place, where you do not want your work data to the public network. (such as Firewalla VPN server or site to site VPN feature)
If you do have reasons to hide from service providers, censorship, try to watch Netflix from another country … VPN is also useful. (and Firewalla VPN client can help you send any device to VPN)
If you are outside and worry that the hotel or Starbucks may listen in on what you are doing, you can VPN home using the Firewalla VPN Server.

I run ExpressVPN on at least 3 devices at a given time via the VPN client . It has been working flawlessly.
I wish I could swap different profiles per device, instead of one profile for all devices.
Future request ?
And the VPN will hide your public IP. DoH only hides your DNS queries. VPN providers route DNS thru their servers anyway to prevent DNS leaks.
I didn’t like toxic kids running LANC and trying to troll my son with IP Stressors. FWG will pull 3074 /3544 player public IPs when grouped in Xbox parties as well.
They solve for different things. A VPN aggregates your traffic with others’ and provides you with a bit of anonymity in your browsing when combined with a few other common sense practices.
I assume most people use it for when they’re not on-site and accessing remotely.
Thanks for the great information!
Hi, Artem. Sounds like a great setup. I don’t need to VPN to my LAN, so the need for one out doesn’t seem necessary for security. As Firewalla posted here in response, “First, VPN doesn’t always mean security … VPN is simply hiding your traffic from your service providers, and not from the VPN provider and the website/service provider.” So, there is some utility in using a VPN through the FWG, but not for the reasons I previously assumed.
The FWG provides the security I need, and it’s what’s blocking attempts by bots and notwhat trying to penetrate your network (and mine), not your VPN. Thanks for your input!
