If I connect to Mullvad or any other VPN blocked sites become unblocked, but if I just change my DNS to their service the site still fails to load. Is my ISP still meddling? How is that possible when using DNS over HTTPS but not possible when using a VPN tunnel?
When you connect to the service when connected to VPN the service sees the source IP of the Mullvad server. When you disconnect the VPN and connect the service sees your real IP and acts accordingly.
When you are connected to VPN your ISP only sees traffic from your real IP to the Mullvad server. When disconnected from VPN your ISP sees the traffic sourcing from your real IP and the destination being the IP of the service.
ok i think i get it. so they’re able to tell what IP address is what site, and if they don’t want you accessing that site they just block all traffic from that IP. i thought they could only interfere on the level of the domain name.
ok that makes sense, thanks for the help.
