I bought tplink ac1750 router and also bought asus rt ax3000 for setting up Whole home VPN router. I’m a complete newbie and never done this and have no idea what I need to do, I can follow instructions even if technical but never really do these things confidently
Can I buy any specific vpn provider and setup above requirement in the routers which I have bought?
Appreciate if there are any guides or procedures to implement this !
Yes, your RT-AX3000 supports setting up router level VPN thru the default ASUS firmware. You can do so through the OpenVPN configuration interface.
However, the RT-AX3000 also supports the famed Asuswrt-Merlin firmware, which offers more functionality than the default ASUS firmware. For RT-AX3000, you download and use the RT-AX58U firmware as they are essentially the same hardware.

To answer your second question, as long as the VPN provider supports OpenVPN configuration (most do), you can assign it to the router. You can search the provider’s website for Router Configuration to find out how to do it. Usually, you need to download a .ovpn configuration file that you need to upload to the router through the OpenVPN interface, and then you need to enter some credentials before it will work.
If you are willing to spend more, there are far better options that open up. Learning required.

Check out the Synology RT6600ax.
Why would you buy equipment before having a plan?
Can we configure RADIUS authentication on RT-AX3000 router’s OpenVPN ?
I’m just starting to do some research into a whole home vpn router setup, myself. Is the ASUSWRT-Merlin firmware a sort of gold standard? I’m finding myself very overwhelmed with all the options and choice out there. I’m thinking about making a post to the community with some of the needs I’m trying to prioritize. However, I’m still sort of learning if there are any sort of standard go-tos for hardware and firmware choices that are good for beginners. Thanks
I didn’t think during purchase and, I assumed it would be possible in all routers and bought it
For ASUS routers, yes, I’d say it is. It certainly has more features than the default firmware that ships with their routers.
For other routers, it’s usually DD-WRT or others it’s mostly a matter of choice.
I wouldn’t say network setup or networking in general is exactly a beginner topic, but what to choose depends on what you need, plus a bit more for redundancy. Look for upcoming standards which improve usability and security and perhaps invest a little more in that but don’t go too much into the future if you want custom firmware on them as soon as you buy as it takes time for the development to catch up.
Go back to the drawing board man.
Return the products.
Research everything.
Buy new equipment according to needs.
Yes I agree I made a mistake and bought it before having a plan
