I am about to start a work-from-home job that requires me to log into a system and speak to clients through the integrated communication portal. It will also require that I communicate with my team from time to time. The rule (apparently) is that I can live where-ever I want as long as it is in the United States. I was told that the IT Security team had developed the portal so that it would not allow logging in from outside of the US.
I’d like to, from time to time, travel and still be able to do my job. If I had to log into the portal for some reason while I’m overseas, would a VPN allow me to do this? Would I be able to make the portal believe that I was in California or Idaho or etc?
A proxy probably wouldn’t work because the list of IP addresses are probably well known and blocked. I don’t know enough about VPNs to determine if attempting to do this job from outside of the US would work out.
Any help is appreciated.
It depends on whether they allow VPN connections.
You could mention that you use a VPN for privacy and are concerned about it being an issue. If they say it’s not, then yes a VPN is a viable means of obscuring your location because they likely have just blocked all non-US IP addresses.
That being said, it’s not hard to detect/discover VPN-use, so they may block VPNs which is why asking in a different context might be a good idea.
Me personally, I’d probably just start the job without asking and attempt connection through a VPN from a different state (not country obviously) and see if it connects. If it does, you’d likely be fine to connect from out of country.
If I were you, I would connect to my home pc remotely with my phone or laptop and just log into the portal like I normally would. Take a look at TeamViewer if you’re not familiar with what I’m talking about.
Like someone else mentioned. Have a second machine that never leaves your house so that you can connect to it from anywhere.
You could always set up a VPN using a Pi on your home network. It would keep it from being black listed. Just may not be the fastest thing overseas, mine gets anywhere from .3mbps to 5mbps down in Europe… in the US it’s like 35mbps.
100% setup a ubuntu server in your house running Open VPN and connect in from anywhere using an old computer.
Don’t even have to leave it running always, just when you leave the country.
Would I be able to make the portal believe that I was in California or Idaho or etc?
Sure. I would suggest however to get into contact with the IT team and figure out an official and allowed solution to this. If you’re not allowed to be outside the US while connecting to the portal, and do it anyway hiding your location via VPN, that is possibly a breach of contract and a valid reason to fire you. Find a solution with IT & get it ratified/added to your contract as additional clause.
RaspberryPi might not work because it has preinstalled proxies which might be already blocked by your company. RasberryPi is good for anonymity but in your case it might not work. You don’t have to worry to much, nowadays vpn’s are very advance, any good VPN can sort out your problem with zero percent chance of you getting caught. Few good VPN providers are Proton VPN, Nord VPN and Express VPN, all of these are equally good, get the cheapest and start fooling your company. If Netflix, Hotstar and few major casino sites aren’t able to block these VPN, i am sure your company can’t. You can always use a VPN, but if you care too much about your privacy, Proton VPN or Cyber Ghost are worth reviewing.
A web browser link to the vpn chart. Could be useful.
Express vpn will do the job 100%
Express VPN allows you to choose different proxy servers around the world and masks the origination IP - use it for sites that don’t allow use from certain countries and it works
this is gonna sound strange but you should use pornhub’s vpn, vpnhub. they don’t log you and it masks your location pretty well.

Thanks! I was hoping that this is the response I’d get. Honestly, cost of living is so much cheaper in other places, if I could make US money without paying US prices, why not…
I’ll just start and attempt to connect from a different state’s VPN. Fingers crosses. Any suggestions on a good premium VPN service?
+1
OP could also run his own VPN at home - either on a dedicated device like a Raspberry Pi or potentially directly on his router.
I second this, if OP is connected to a VPN and the connection breaks for some reason and his application reconnects he is screwed. I cant even watch streaming services like Netflix and Hulu without this happening every few hours.
Or even better, leave it at your friends house. That way if you ever do hacking and get caught theyll break into their house instead of yours. Lol

I use NordVPN for daily use. Their 3 year license was a good deal when I bought. For your purposes, probably any of the most common choices should work fine.
