What is this Windows VPN service?

Hello, All,

I came across the Windows VPN service from my Defender. I have never used personal VPN services. I don’t know if it is a third-party app under Windows. It’s a free service, and Microsoft says the VPN isn’t designed for streaming content such as music or video. My questions are

  1. Is it good for secure browsing when using public networks?
  2. Why the data limit (Do they store the logs, or is it just Window’s way of giving you a new subscription service)?
  3. I use public wifi networks (coffee shops, travel, etc). So can use it for secure browsing?

Thanks.

It’s “free” because you already paid for 365

Yeah it is fine for basic “I don’t want my ISP or router know what sites I’m visiting”

Since they don’t charge extra for the service, they don’t setup that much bandwidth compared to common commercial provider. The idea is for you to only use it while out and about, while at home you’re expected to already trust your router and ISP so you won’t be using the VPN.

They don’t keep traffic log, except for how long and how much traffic you’re using, and optionally (by default it’s not enabled) hotspot names that are considered malicious for their research purpose.
