I came across this article about a new “privacy search engine” called Privado, which seems to pull search results from Microsoft’s Bing in a similar way how Startpage pulls results from Google.
I’m not familiar with CodeFuel, the owner of the Privado search engine.
Some time ago I stopped using Startpage when it was taken over by some kind of digital marketing company.
Is this another questionable “privacy” search engine?
Oh hey, what do you know? I see 2 cookies being used.
Besides that little annoyance, it bothers me that the website requires the use of javascript. DuckDuckGo doesn’t.
Here is the data they collect (according to the privacy policy):
IP address
User agent string
Search terms
I’m a little concerned about this part of the policy:
We may ask you for additional information to confirm your identity and for security purposes, before disclosing any such requested information to you or processing your request. We reserve the right to charge a fee where permitted by law, for instance if your request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.
As they don’t really elaborate on what they mean by “confirm your identity”.
I stumbled across this in a Forbes article yesterday. Made a quick visit just to see what it looked like but didn’t take the time too dig deep. I never cared for Startpage, and instead use DuckDuckGo. Given that Privado and DDG both pull from Bing, it will be interesting to compare the output from both.
