So, I’ve been using a cheap Shadowrocket proxy (20-30rmb a month) for a while right now and I’m just wondering if anyone is having any success with setting up their own VPS server. I can pay slightly more than what I am paying right now but what protocol is best right now? What cheap VPS works well in China? How are you even supposed to connect to your VPS; does Clash and Shadowrocket work or is there a different client? I feel like as someone who has accumulated so much experience in using proxies in China the only logical step now is to move on to hosting my own VPS server for a nice experience that I’m more in control of without being constantly blocked by proxy blockers. The thing is, I still don’t know if it’s worth it: does anyone seriously recommend setting up their own VPS over cheap Shadowrocket/Clash servers that work pretty well? Any response would be appreciated, thank you.
Not worth, too hard to get residential IPs, your vps dataenter ip will not provide a good user experience
Clash is a client that supports multi protocols, just choose one that it supports and it will work but again using data center ip from a single region is annoying
Does your shadowrocket provider has high availability ? Or does he have just one machine behind ? Because with any solution, you will get ip blocked. So better to have X servers behind with different ip, and switch around when one get blocked. I heard there are cheaper provider for fast and high availability (but never tried)
Yes you can host on your own vps from like Azure AWS Vultr. The cheapest ones are around $5/month. There are scripts that you can use to set it up for you like this. But it still requires some knowledge of computer network, like buying a domain and manage DNS.
I have zero knowledge regarding anything technical, but as with most Shadowrocket proxies mine has a very few number of servers that rarely change so pretty much all of them have been flagged by proxy blockers already. I don’t know about cheaper alternatives, they probably do exist but I assume the cheaper and better ones are much harder to come across…

Thank you for your information. Do you have any experience with Vultr? Is there a significant loss of speed? Does it require more knowledge than what a couple of Youtube videos can provide?
I heard « letsvpn » but i never tried it. It’s not a vpn, but it’s a proxy, just like shadowrocket maybe. But i read a lot of people are using it.
I used this before but the VPS ip got blocked after a day , then I setup a new one , blocked again in hours.
