I use Surfshark and I currently use my IP provided wifi router with a wired backhaul extender. I use a vpn at the device level. I currently get 100 mb out 1 gig for a wired device and would accept that speed going forward. I want to change to a router level vpn that is Surfshark compatible. I have 1 gig fiber and am looking for a VPN capable wifi router that I can also use a wired backhaul for 2 wifi access points.
Thanks in advance.
Hi, here are a few routers we recommend for using with Surfshark:
Most Asus routers that have the AsusWRT firmware installed, as they support VPN Client or the VPN Fusion function, which is a great option.
For example - Asus AX3000 (the same as RT-AX58U), ASUS RT-AX86U, and ASUS RT-AC68U. If you are looking to invest in a router with great processing power - ASUS-RT-AX88U.
However, if you are looking for something cheaper, I’d suggest looking into GL.iNet routers.
You can take a look into these: GL.iNET GL-MT300N; GL-MT300N-V2; GL-AR300M or GL-MT300N-V2
These routers would be perfectly fine for you if you do not require much performance, and they even have a preinstalled OpenVPN protocol - some of the routers have the WireGuard protocol, too.
Generally, if you would like to get the best possible speed with VPN, I would recommend using an ASUS router with VPN Fusion Client (as it has Wireguard available which performs much better than OpenVPN on routers as it is lightweight).
I think something would be the issue with the device because using a vpn won’t lose that much speed unless you’re using a server across the world from you. What device do you have it plugged into?
On Asus router. I can select which device to be VPN while the rest are on ISP.
I use 2 Belkin RT3200 (Linksys E8450) flashed with openwrt using wireguard protocol, both of them are using mesh setup. My ISP connection is 300mb and I get max download speed with a Surfshark dedicated IP. These routers are cheap bit have good specs and also support wifi 6. OpenWRT https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/e8450 OpenWRT - 802.11s Mesh WiFi Network https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cw8ykKgVKbMWireguard Setup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_zQAp3V18c GL.iNET Flint 2 (GL-MT6000) more expensive router but wireguard setup would be easier.
