Any suggestions for VPN’s that focus on ping performance for gamers? My Aussie friend likes to play on the NA servers with me but has terrible ping. He has tried WTFast, mudfish and pingzapper and still gets disconnected a lot/often has high ping.
Would some of the bigger VPN’s like NordVPN or ExpressVPN be worth trying or will they likely be slower because of a focus on security?
A lot of vpn companies offer a little bit of free time, one that I used to use and quite liked was mullvad, and I know that that offers a few hours of free time. Not sure about others, but yeah.
Don’t expect VPNs to necessarily solve your problems here. They CAN reduce your ping, but iirc, only in the case where your ISP’s internet routes are horrible or congested. For example, I’ve cut 20 ms connecting to my friend’s gmod server in salt lake city from texas with a vpn, simply because AT&T is that bad. The bulk of his latency is probably simply due to there being an ocean in the way, and a VPN is unlikely to fix that.
While I use NordVPN and highly recommend it for activities that benefit from VPN, I don’t think you would see much benefit from it. As White Mage mentioned, it’s likely more the distance than anything else.
That said, I have a friend who did get better connection to NA while using VPN, but it really depends on your ISP. If the connection is somehow better to the closest VPN server, then you can see an improvement, but it’s still not that much. The most improvement he ever got was like 50-75 ms.
Try Speedify. You can try it a bit for free, and if you like it, look around for a coupon on the internet to knock a LOT off the price. Mine is 12.50$ US per year, and yes, it helps. YMMV, but it probably won’t hurt.
I’m in Asia and play on Europe. I use WTFast and have no problems and no lag. Without it, i get dced and have extremely noticeable lag. He has to configure his wtfast to connect via a tunnel thats near the server location. Sometimes those tunnels crash and u have to find another one. There are lots of options.
Do you know which ISP he is with by any chance? Because I’m in Australia and play on NA servers and the only time I dc is if there is an issue with my internet. Some of our cheaper providers offer sub par internet services.
I also use Battleping and route through Texas and my ping sits consistently around 30.
Look up on various types of VPNs out there also invluding Mudfish and Exitlag ( i use personally and it provides the best results for me). He has to try out various VPNs because what may work for me may not work him. For example My friend uses Mudfish and it works for him and it doesnt for me.
Also dont expect to reduce ping by a significant amount all the VPN is doing is rerouting your packets by taking a more quicker path than the usual route
My experience with VPNs is even the paid ones aren’t going to ever increase your speeds, it’s only purpose is to get around region locking and hiding your IP. I’ve never had a better connection with a VPN though if a country was being throttled for some reason I guess it would improve it, but Aussies aren’t being throttled they just live way too far away.
Speeds have hardly any affect with ping. I’m from Australia specifically Melbourne and if i dont get a vpn i get about 190 to 240ish depending on whats going on. But with a VPN i get about 170 ping and its a noticeable reduction. Thats on NA servers
