Virginia's Age Verification On Adult Websites Is Worse Than You Think

I don’t really care that much because I don’t watch porn, but this just goes to show how old and out-of-touch US politicians are, regardless of party. This stops nobody and just allows more data collection from websites. Besides, are you really going to expect a horny 16-year-old to wait until they’re 18 to start looking at porn?

Tried it out of curiosity. It’s still accessible.

Edit: I’m at work and tried it on my phone. I bought my phone in NY. I didn’t think this would be an issue, but when I look up my ip location it still says I am in NY, which means pornhub thinks I am in NY. I will try again on my home PC (also bought in NY) later.

I’m speechless…… if politicians want to pass moronic rules they deserve to be treated as such.

What is the point of this? I’m trying to understand its purpose.

It passed… unanimously? Not a single rep has a problem with this absolutely insane invasion of privacy?

It’s time to fully clean house. Regardless of party, how can anybody except a scowling rocking chair grandma support this nonsense?

Anyone know how this works with Apple Private Relay?

Not in Va currently (but home is Va).

Dude that’s the worst idea ever wtf. With how weak government systems are. Guarantee those photos are served on a network. They are going to get a lot of guys with hands on their dicks not realizing they take a photo. I don’t read the fine print.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

  1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 1-240.1 as follows:

§ 1-240.1. Rights of parents.

A parent has a fundamental right to make decisions concerning the upbringing, education, and care of the parent’s child.

  1. That it is the expressed intent of the General Assembly that this act codify the opinion of the Supreme Court of Virginia in L.F. v. Breit, issued on January 10, 2013, as it relates to parental rights.

HOW IS THIS EVEN LEGAL

Pornhub is literally disabled in VA now.

How long until the pedos in the gop walk this one back?

Just went to one and nothing

As someone in a state where this could become a reality, I’m wishing you a very “fuck these old racist puritans who think a handmaids tale sounds dope as fuck”

We shall not go limp without a fight!!

You may care to reach out to a 1A-friendly law firm like Institute for Justice (http://www.ij.org) for this sort of thing. If you do, let us know how it goes.

Party of small government, right?

Do these idiot Jesus freaks and idiot ancients, who are more likely to wire money to Nigerian princes than know how to use a computer, think that youth won’t be able to bypass these dumb requirements? They’ll all be crying when the leak happens and they find Grandpa’s face on a list of people accessing trans porn.

Just want to reiterate (because it’s important) that dems backed this 100%. Show anger at them too.

Also, I see that a similar law, passed in 2000, was struck down on 1A grounds. Any chance this is going to be fought?

I am by no means a fan of the porn industry, but Jesus Christ this is so fucked up on so many levels. Such an awful invasion of privacy, and it feels very… handmaid’s tale. Why can’t they focus this energy on hunting down child predators and distribution of CSAM? :man_facepalming: This state is on a horrific downward spiral.

They want to know who is watching porn and what kind of porn it is.

Don’t tread on me - my ass

“age estimation” based on a picture seems like the dumbest way to do it even if it wasn’t a data security nightmare. Like a good chunk of the most popular… actresses probably couldn’t watch their own videos in VA anymore lmao.
