I literally can’t do my homework because I am struggling to connect to the WiFi. They need to fix this- this is fucking ridiculous!!!
If you’re having problems on the hill, report it to the STC. If you’re having issues on campus, report it to the ITSC in Kerckhoff. Campus IT is very interested in providing good coverage, but can’t do anything to fix problem areas if they don’t get reports about them.
I’m using ucla WiFi
Is anyone having better luck with edu roam? Is that better? How do you use it?
You guys don’t remember the wifi issues on M1 macs last fall that took a whole quarter and apple engineering coming on campus to fix. Those were dark days
What Wi-Fi network are you on?
!! And that supports WhatsApp!! Like so many international students use WhatsApp to communicate back home why should we use our data for that
I hope our wifi gets worse
UCLA IT isn’t going to fix anything. They’re all pissed that they’re losing their jobs and are now “quiet quitting” or doing the bare minimum until they get “reimagined”. Look at the administration and guess where they’re coming from. They’re all from USC.
Welcome to ucla, problems at the school only get worse not better. Wifi was horrible last year and it’s only gotten worse
Just wait until week or 6, it gets better
connect to eduroam! works sm better and it’s not annoying where it makes u log in all the time
You say campus IT wants to improve the WiFi but there are several ongoing requests to add access points in some buildings that have been open since winter quarter 2023. I know one’s been fulfilled this past month but did it really need to take 9 months just for that request?
eduroam is generally always going to be better, especially for portable devices. The SSID is in use at higher education institutions across the US. The way that authentication works, it tunnels credentials back to your home institution, but can get you local access. If you configure for eduroam at UCLA, your device will work at any other UC, Cal State, and many other locations (including some you wouldn’t expect, like Getty Center as an example).
Credentials are your [email protected] and your normal Shibboleth password. STC or ITSC in Kerckhoff can help if you get stuck.
Username: [email protected]
Password: Your UCLA Logon Password
Though it hasn’t been any better than UCLA_WIFI for me. It seems to be in the bigger communal areas where these problems occur, not as much in lecture halls and classrooms.
Curious… what is the error and/or wifi you are using. Are you in the dorms… in a building on campus… housing… need a bit more info before we get funky mad. Who remembers when apple devices couldnt connect… that actually “was” apple’s update that caused issues… hah.
Use the eduroam SSID if you’re on campus or on the hill. Don’t use UCLA_WEB. There’s nothing on the wireless network that would block WhatsApp.
Wait it’s the wifi that causes problem in my whatsapp??! That’s ridiculous. All this time I kept thinking it’s my problem bruh
There are no active plans to drop UCLA_WEB or UCLA_WIFI.
As with all things at UCLA, it’s complicated. Campus IT is very interested in improving wifi and is very interested in reporting where there are problems. Some times fixing those is easy. Other times, there are complications and it takes time. Many of the older buildings on campus have restrictions on what where access points can be placed. Some buildings have difficulty obtaining cabling pathway. Others have visual requirements or facade components. There are some buildings where wifi is not centrally managed and campus IT can’t go in and start making changes.
I don’t have any particular insight about why one request took 9 months to complete or any particular response to that. All I can say is that there is definite interest in improving the general state of affairs and part of that effort involves collecting on the ground information.
UCLA_WEB isn’t password protected at all and some apps don’t like that…
