I go to China almost every year for Chinese new year and last year struggled with popular vpns like nord, express etc. what VPNs currently work in China?
Well most reliable stuff for going through firewall is eSIM, because it has a built in VPN in it, it never gets disrupted currently. Airalo/holafly you name it all work fine
Letsvpn is pretty reliable and cheap.
Mullvad 100% letsvpn did not work for me on my trip in September
A lot of expats in China use Astrill, but it ain’t very cheap
I have hotspot shield (paid) and it’s recently stopped working well. In the mean time i downloaded Proton VPN and the free version works perfectly. I’m very surprised but hopefully it carries on working
I switched from Astrill to LetsVPN about 6 months ago and I am very satisfied so far.
Tmobil international roaming as it is works the best for me. Free for first 5g as well for most plans. Then I used my own wire guard server hosted on cloud. Working great as well.
Astrill doesn’t work very well.
I personally use Clash for Android with two different server providers, in my particular case fengqun and onecat. But there are dozens of providers that can be used with clash I believe.
LetsVPN worked well 2 weeks ago when I was there
Tunnel Bear worked great for me.
Replying to you from China. I’m currently using LetsVPN. I’ve been here roughly 2 weeks and I have had no problem with it on Mobile Networks or on the Home Network.
Last time I was here (2022), I used Express VPN. It would work on WiFi but it was really hit and miss on mobile networks.
I highly recommend LetsVPN.
Mullvad is currently working well and it’s cheap
Hey! Many popular VPNs struggle in China due to the Great Firewall. You might want to try smaller or lesser-known options.
For a reliable mobile internet solution in China, Holafly offers eSIMs with great coverage. More info here: Holafly in China.
Safe travels!
Shadowrocket has been flawless for me
Astrill works very well, but it’s pricey. If Lets VPN works as well as everyone says it does, and it’s cheaper, seems like a better option
Interested to see how NordVPNs new protocol will work in a few months
If you are travelling China for less than a month, you are probably better off getting an eSIM than VPN. This blog post about VPN and eSIM might be useful to you.
lets works. Astrill does not. it is fucking awful and anyone who recommends it must be getting paid to. no one could be that stupid.
