I’m being offered this but I have no idea what it does TELUS Online Security Powered by Norton. Please pros and cons in plain language, thanks in advance
You don’t need it. There’s no pros.
They’re about as credible as McAfee at this point. I uninstalled and refuse to touch Norton since they released their “opt-in” crypto miner a couple years ago. Their PR said that it was opt in only and you had to give permission to the app but I found it using my machine for that despite never opting in. They install the software packaged with everything else in their installer without asking you explicit information for it. If you aren’t aware, cryptomining is a massive reason for the huge inflation on price for graphics cards in the last few years since they chew them up and spit them out.
Irt the services ie deep web monitoring, security and VPN services, I just use Dashlane. It’s cheaper (around 3$ a month) and as long as you are smart about your internet activity and what links you click or things you download, free software such as malwarebytes should cover scans just fine.
Also I feel like it’s prudent to mention a lot of VPN use is for masking your IP both outwards and your isp offering a VPN service is kind of like the cops offering to watch your back while you go shoplift if you get my meaning.
Never install Norton
Norton is junk, ignore the upsell calls.
The “dark web monitoring” and identity theft features are interesting to me.
I just noticed that I’ve been paying $10 per month for that useless “Telus OnLine Security” since January of this year.
Is there any actual disclosure from Telus on exactly what I am paying for?
I understand that it’s MY responsibility to check my bill each month, but it was added without my approval. Is there any possibility to be refunded retroactively? I’d argue that Telus added this functionality and began charging me but did not inform me.
I found this: https://www.telus.com/en/business/support/article/what-is-telus-online-security-basic
It’s basically antivirus and optional VPN. It’s better than it used to be but still not something I’m a fan of. I also see issues with their vpn, specifically if you have smart home security.
It’s not worth it, had to erase my computers 3 x, it’s a gimmick
It’s pretty much Norton anti-virus. Very much bloatware that extorts you for money if you want to continue protection (if you switch from telus for example to another ISP, this will happen immediately).
Best not to bother using it. Windows includes it’s own anti-virus solution. If you use mac (apple or intel-based computers via hackintosh/uefi settings tricks) or gnu/linux (available on all computers), you won’t even need it.
Most you will need is an adblocker such as ublock origin or Adblock ultimate (forget Adblock plus - they moved to a pay up or get less adblocking moto), which gets rid of the crap you expect on any website which shows advertising (any/all kinds, including malware).
Second this. You can get similar services that are significantly cheaper and better.
If you want better online security:
- Use a good password manager, I recommend Bitwarden Personal (Free but with paid options) Or if you’re tech savy PasswordXC which you can host yourself (This is also free with paid options).
- Use a VPN while on a public network. You can either make your own or I recommend Proton
- Check Sites like “Have I been Pwened” to see if one of your accounts have been leaked onto the dark web. Change the passwords periodically.
Can I remove it from my pc after its installed? Telus offered me $74 for 1.5 gb internet (I think its normally $109), and a $450 credit. I dont care for Norton or their security, but it was a pretty slick deal all things considered
Just means they see if your email is on some sort of list of login passwords. And yes chances are it is. Someone probably sold your email to someone at some point. Then they found a password you used or maybe not and put it into a list.
Do it for free here
Well online security should be free if you got a smart home security service.
Norton has never been “better than it used to be.” Every new version adds more bloat and less performance.
Norton used to be decent. In the 1900’s.
Don’t forget 2FA (via authenticator application or SMS - just don’t change your number before turning it off if need be - not because of scammers calling either).
nah we got charged $8 per month, and we just noticed it as my dad doesn’t really look into things and just say no, but i was the one who has been paying it. so its been like almost a year already
Maybe we’re talking about different time frames but Norton in the early 2000s were dark times. Oddly their Ghost software was quite useful.
Edit: my bad forgot about the cryptominer from a couple years ago. Fuck that shit.
I remember the late 2000’s being worse than the early ones… Mostly because of licensing changes.
