As of yesterday, I’ve got multiple different Android phones where the Wi-Fi stopped working with a “no internet” message, but it is still connected. I manage corporate networks and almost all of them are deny-by-default security policy. After some diagnostics, I was able to determine connections are being blocked because they’re trying to use “ThunderVPN”. As soon as I allow that, Wi-Fi starts working again. Anyone know anything about this? I haven’t turned up anything on Google. I can’t find any settings in the phone about VPN. ThunderVPN is not an installed app.
EDIT: I am using WatchGuard firewalls across the board.
EDIT 2: This is a known issue with the latest Watchguard Application Control signature. For now, allowing ThunderVPN in your policies is the only workaround. A new signature should be released soon to fix the issue.
Thank you for those edits! Have a great weekend!
We are experiencing this as well. Did not effect our Windows, or Apple devices. We use WatchGuard firewalls and APs with WatchGuard Cloud. Following u/calculatetech advice; we set our template > Content Filter > Application Control > “Tunneling and proxy services” > “ThunderVPN” > to “allow”. All the Android phones are now happily connected. We hope followup with WatchGuard and find out when we can revert the changes. Does anyone know if Android using ThunderVPN is new or if WatchGuard Application Control signature is the only new change?
What firewall vendor are you using?
We are having the same issue. We use watchguard for firewall.
We are making a ticket with WatchGuard about this as we are having the same issue. We are a platinum partner so we should hopefully get movement on this.
We fixed by allowing thunder vpn
I’m using WatchGuard as well.
As of time of this post, the issue is resolved with a new App Control signature. Above article gamegeek136 posted shows it resolved. I also confirmed it on a WG firewall.
Side note, if you have a WatchGuard Firewall and were NOT affected, your app control feature is likely under configured.
