On stock Android do you guys use a VPN or Netguard for privacy?
Could you also please explain why you chose the solution that you did?
I have a P20 Pro and am not sure which to use.
I am not looking to discuss specific VPN providers, just VPNs in general Vs Netguard.
I use Netguard, because personally I’m more concerned / annoyed about the plethora of apps that connect to the internet. I wish Android would let us toggle this permission but it’s one of the many that you cannot.
I’d like to be able to use a VPN as well but I wouldn’t use one in preference to Netguard. It doesn’t matter how private the connection is if an app can “phone home” and syphon all your data.
I use Firefox VPN and sofar working quite well
Netguard with tor (orbot)
Watching videos from The hated one, he argues that a vpn on a phone is little beneficial as they get your real location trough the cell tower data, so if you are using it for masking your location then its not really helping you. So on a phone is much better to block trafic with netguard.
I see the reason behind that and use netguard most of the time on my phone. the only times that i use a vpn in my phone is to acess geo-locked content or if im in a public wifi as it provdess extra security.
From my understanding, Netguard uses internal VPN or something so I would be unable to use another VPN for my traffic.
I’ve got Netguard set up to notify me when any app attempts to make a connection that’s blocked, which happens a couple of times a week maybe.
It’s more likely that it’s saving battery because these apps are not able to use the data so the Wi-Fi radio can stay in sleep mode.
Ah, that’s because it uses Android’s VPN to manage the firewall, and you can only have one VPN enabled on Android at a time. Fair enough.
In that case, I’d probably setup Pihole and Wireguard on a server, then use Wireguard on your phone, with Pihole as your DNS.
The WiFi radio uses significantly more battery than a bunch of CPU cycles for the app to do something.
I block everything by default and whitelist the apps that I’m happy to let through, so yeah, they’ll be the apps that I’m using.
