Steam Link App + VPN = PC Gaming on Phone, Anywhere
Hey guys. I was testing out using the Steam Link App away from home by using a VPN, and it was successful. So I’m posting a video explaining the tech behind it, and also showing some demo gameplay. (It’s not the best experience since there’s some lag, but it’s…playable I guess. It doesn’t bother me.)
Here’s a link to the blog post I made if you’d prefer to read about it instead. https://www.srcmake.com/home/steam-link-app
Not to put this idea down, but it’s probably easier to just use parsec and skip the VPN step altogether.
Parsec will definitively be easier to setup and play with at remote distance
Why bother with a VPN? Just forward the ports you need and connect directly.
Also works with port forwarding https://i.imgur.com/u9gXdfs.jpg
Been using it as my “desktop” at work.
Playing w3 with lag + pixel graphics. Amazing.
So I got the VPN up and could access things like my Nas via browser, but steam link couldn’t see the pc. Think it has to do with the subnet my router assigns VPN clients to?
I could see this being more useful on older games. If you sacrifice quality to get it functioning better I could see playing some 10 year old games like that.
I looked up Parsec and it looks interesting. I don’t really want to install third party software on my computer but if you have any videos or what the gameplay is like, I’d love to watch it.
Well Parsec for one doesn’t have a Linux server…
As mentioned in another comment, Parsec looks cool. Do you have any videos of gameplay?
I didn’t know that was possible. Which ports need to be forwarded? Is there a guide you have a link too?
It works for anything really. https://i.imgur.com/u9gXdfs.jpg
Connection stats aren’t too much worse than LAN.
It’s great, they just released an android client.
The best thing about it is you can play local multiplayer games like overcooked over the internet with friends. With surprisingly no noticeable lag.
The parsec YouTube channel has some examples.
Just go on parsec gaming website you’ll see everything you need. But it is solid stuff and works with minimum connectivity
UDP 27031 - 27036 and TCP 27036 - 27037.
Use the “search other computer” option when searching for you computer and enter the public/external IP address of your host PC’s network.
Latency is the biggest factor. RPG’s would be 100% okay. I wouldn’t try csgo for example though. Still really cool that it works.
Guys do you think it’s safe to open those ports to public like this?

My setup is Fios router → Airport Extreme → Desktop
If I setup port forwarding on the Fios router and then put in my external IP onto the Steam Link app on my phone, would this work?
