Even if I somehow jiggy my way to connect to my home wifi the school wifi will auto connect after 5 minutes. Doesn’t seem very legal.
I would screencap this and send to the teacher : “since my WiFi is disabled I cannot perform the given task at hand, and administrators need to perform their basic task to enable me being able to do what this device is for: homework”.
Don’t put any real effort in making it work, your school’s IT policy is clearly meant to not give you the ability to connect to the internet at home. Tell the teacher and the admin staff this, they either update their policy or they don’t demand anything that can’t be done without connecting to a network outside of school.
Wow. This would piss me off and buy my own laptop or better yet find a way to jailbreak the chromebook.
“We want to control what you see, don’t try using a hotspot because we want to know what porn you’re into”.
Does your computer have an Ethernet connection. Just plug in wired.
As a school tech. I can say the main reason they put this on is if it’s not meant to be taken out of the school.
Doesn’t seem very legal.
Who owns the machine?
Dont try to beat the system, that will just get you in trouble. Send a picture to your teacher, let them know the insanely restrictive policy prevents you from working outside of school hours, and let them take it up with IT.
You must live close to your school. This is something that is deployed to keep students from connecting to hotspots while on campus. You will need to have your Google Admin or IT from the school or district change your profile. We ran into this issue with a small handful of students and had to add them to a separate org within Google.
During Covid we amped up our outdoors wifi to cover a large parking lot for students that didn’t have wifi at home. So when students came back on campus and we put those locks in place it caused this issue. As a temporary work around you can try to block out the schools wifi by moving around your house until it doesn’t show any more. Isn’t the best solution and I would make sure your school understands what is happening.
What kind of war crime is that
Legal? It’s their computer. They can do whatever they want to it. Why would you think there would be a law protecting this?
Using your phone, create a hotspot and name it the same as the school wifi.
This doesn’t seem very legal
It’s your school’s laptop, right? They can do whatever they want. At least you get a laptop. I had to purchase a new Windows laptop so my daughter could do her homework. When I asked the principal whether the school would provide one they just said “umm try the public library?”
Doesn’t seem very legal.
Whose computer is it?
This is why I use My personal ThinkPad and connect it to My hotspot when at School so they can’t see or control what I’m doing and plus that means no blocked websites.
ok its a dick move, but how is it illegal?
i wouldn’t try and bypass this either as it will most likely alert the administrator of the disconnect so they’ll charge you for the laptop. just have a day off lol.
I would do what others recommend but if the school refuses get an Ethernet cable
Legal is not the word you’re looking for.
