Ok, so I’m writing because I’m interviewing for a remote work position. I had planned on working from South America for several months, then coming back to the U.S. for the remainder. (I’m American)
The company is in the U.S. I was told today that I could log into their system/work from anywhere in the U.S., however, not overseas. I was wondering if;
A. I can use a VPN to make it look like I’m logging in from somewhere in the U.S. while overseas.
B. If the company would be able to see if I’m using a VPN to connect.
C. If possible, what VPN’s you guys recommend for this type of use.
D. Is there any other way to log into their system and make it look like I’m still in the U.S. without being traced?
Any information would be helpful.
*Please omit any comments about visas and labor laws while working in another country lol I’m trying to work and travel while I’m still young.
Thanks guys!

Yes you can. Keep in mind that any drop in the VPN could mean your south american IP address will be used
B. If the company would be able to see if I’m using a VPN to connect.
Yes.
C. If possible, what VPN’s you guys recommend for this type of use.
not sure. to be honest, I wouldn’t attempt it. If they say they don’t want you working outside the US, there’s probably a good reason. You could get fired, or worse
D. Is there any other way to log into their system and make it look like I’m still in the U.S. without being traced?
setup a PC at home in the US. Remote connect to that device and connect to your work from there.
if they want to check, theyll see ur using a vpn.
i wouldnt risk it if their policies preclude u from working outside the US. i would assume that’s policy for security reasons, and violating it could get you fired.
if ur gonna do it, go for a verified no logs vpn like mullvad.
again tho, i wouldn’t do that.
Thanks brother! Also found this website on another thread that discloses if your using a VPN based off of your IP address. Of course the service I chose came up right away. lol
your ISP/possibly your company if they look into it will be able to know if you’re using a vpn by looking at your IP and seeing if it is associated to any given VPN’s IP ranges. this is how netflix etc detects if ur using a vpn. they know what nordvpns’ ip ranges are, for example, and so block access to anyone using their vpn. if ur company did a formal investigation, it would be very easy for them to ascertain whether you’re using a vpn unless you were to use the most obscure vpn available, which is probly a bad idea as you’d want a reputable one. there’s no real way around that.
I guess this would apply even if the VPN provider used obfuscation servers?
(Bear with me, I’ve only been studying this for two hours) Thanks again!
i would think so. i’m not an expert on obfuscation but at the end of the day it wouldn’t take much investigation to ascertain that the ip ranges you’re using are associated to a vpn provider, no matter what protocol you are using.
plus honestly, if the company has explicitly told u not to be outside the us while working, why violate the rule. its just not worth it unless u don’t care about the job.
Yeah… I get it haha I don’t really care about the job, but you’re absolutely right. Thank you again for the info!
Thank you for clarifying!
