ProtonVPN DNS for PS5?

Does this even exist? Some VPN have special DNSes that help with gaming. I cannot find this for ProtonVPN so it probably not exist but I wanted to ask anyways.

Any DNS service that’s claiming to “help with gaming” is full of it.

The DNS is resolved before the match starts, the IP is known, everyone syncs up, and the game starts.

DNS will not help your gaming experience (unless you’re having trouble getting into matches in the first place/have general Internet issues).

Best thing to do… Set your router to use 1.1.1.1 DNS and call it a day, that’ll be a big improvement over ISP DNS.

Where do you find the settings for ps5 ip address sub net, primary and secondary dns etc…?

Hello.

Thanks either way. Did not know about 1.1.1.1 router trick. I will try that. Thanks.

Try 9.9.9.9 (Quad9) over 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare)

Quad9 for me is a lot slower than Cloudflare and I think it does not support DNSSEC?

Why Quad9? I’m just curious. And do I need DNSSEC with a VPN? And is DNSSEC slower?

DNSSEC should have zero impact on speeds. In fact, many of the more secure DNS protocols (such as DNS-over-TLS or DNS-overQUIC) actually improve speed while also raising privacy/security. DNSSEC also requires compatibility with the end point, and as much of the internet simply doesn’t support it, most DNS providers will just default back to regular connections when required.

My general recommendation for gaming is to set up a Proton wireguard profile up on your router (the advantage is blanket protection for all your devices) but to exclude your gaming devices by MAC address so that they are more directly connected to the internet. This has to be done at the router level, as a router wireguard implementation does not communicate with any Proton app directly. Some routers allow for this natively, some require wiping and installing OpenWRT, and others are fundamentally not able to do this. I have recommendations for routers that can do this in a user friendly fashion if you need one.

IF you DO need to use VPN for your PS5, then create a custom wireguard protocol through your Proton account, and specifically enable NAT compatibility. (You can label it with “gaming” somewhere so that when you plug this profile into your router, you will remember its purpose). This will allow your console to more directly connect when playing games while maintaining VPN connection, thus reducing latency slightly, but can potentially create gaps in your VPN defense in specific scenarios. It’s a balance between speed and security that you must decide. Some routers will also allow you to switch between multiple wireguard profiles seamlessly from an app, so you can just switch on the gaming profile when needed to reduce security gaps.

Regarding DNS, using the default DNS when Proton is connected should be fine. If you do wish to choose a specific DNS, I would recommend setting up Cloudflare as the default at router level (1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1) or creating a NextDNS profile if you wish to enable better ad filtering while maintaining comparable speed.

Hope that helps.
