Personal VPN and Public WiFi

I currently use a WireGuard VPN to connect to a home server from my phone. Does this VPN offer the same protection against public WiFi as, for example, a Surfshark or NordVPN subscription? If not, what is different?

Looking through Black Friday deals and wondering if I should bother renewing my VPN provider subscription…

Yes. The difference is the exit point. In your home vpn, your exit point is your home’s isp, with Surfshark or Nord, the exit point is their servers.
