I got a 2 year subscription with Nord on Aug 16, 2022 for $66. I just noticed my card was charged for $139 for a 1 year term even though my subscription term isn’t over. What can I do about this? Can I ask for a refund?
my card was charged for $139 for a 1 year
After the end of your first Subscription period, your Subscription will be automatically renewed for an additional term:
- 1-year and longer Subscriptions - for the 1-year Subscription period annually.
- Shorter than 1-year Subscriptions - for the same respective Subscription period each time.
You will be charged the then-current price of the Services valid at the time of your renewal.
my subscription term isn’t over.
Sometimes, Nord is unable to charge the user by the auto-renewal date because the transaction fails on the user’s side (e.g., expired card, insufficient funds balance). Please note that Nord reserves the right to initiate automatic payment retries for any failed transactions within fourteen (14) days after the scheduled auto-renewal date.
You will find all this information in their Terms of Service, section 2. AUTOMATIC RENEWAL: https://my.nordaccount.com/legal/terms-of-service/subscription/.
Tl;dr: You got the deal, used it, and after the initial plan time runs out, you’re now charged the full price.
Contact their support and request a refund.
Also, next time read the FAQ and you would see that Nord charges you 2 weeks before your expiration date.
Those cheap 2 year deals are OFFERS, meaning that after the offer is over you will pay the full price.
I always suggest making recurring payments through PayPal. That way no company has your direct credit card number or bank account number information directly, and you can always log into your PayPal account at any time and stop autopay for any account assigned to it, so when it tries to charge you through PayPal, PayPal will decline it, and if you then want to accept, Nord will contact you to say your payment was declined and you can go to PayPal and reinstate the autopay. And a 400% increase?!?! Get support on the phone and find out what the fu$k is up with that! Tell them you will cancel and go elsewhere if that isn’t rectified. There are way too many options out there for them to pull that sh-t.
Thank you for this post, I just went and checked as my auto renewal was in 2 months… cancelled that!
Wow thank you for this post. You just saved me a bunch of money!
Edited to add: This was a big eye opener. No reputable business does this. I will not be buying any other Nord products and won’t renew. I was actually very happy with them and would have considered giving them more of my money, but setting the renewal to be automatic and charging 14 days prior to the end of a subscription period stinks highly of predatory business practices, being specifically designed to entrap subscribers into unwanted subscriptions at much higher rates. In my case, it would have been over double what I agreed to pay the first (and now only) time I paid them. I have seen less shifty practices end in class action suits (example: Bark box)
Same, they immediately pointed to the self serving premature auto renewal policy, their terms and conditions & pitched it as ‘For my convenience’.
Demand a refund immediately, sit tight a few days after they see you walk, they will likely send a much more favorable incentive. If and when you renew, immediately switch off auto renewal.
The auto renewal on a different pricing tier is a bait and switch technique that those who practice such deceitful techniques to entrap clients should be called out on!
Just my opinion… it goes along way to show the way this company is operated. Would never recommend to use this VPN provider.
You can get a refund. I had the same thing happen to me. They will try and tell you that you can’t and they will try and give you a few extra months for free. Just keep saying that you want a refund and they should eventually give it to you.
Just went to turn off auto-renewal. Thanks for the heads up.
Don’t ask reddit. Call your cc company
Wow, how many times it was said, do not use nord and if you must use disposable vcc
In these situations, would the best thing to do be turning off auto renew and just let your subscription run out, and then buy it again using the deals/offers they have on the front page? (Seems like they always have offers available)
Yep that’s why you don’t renew and just resign up with a deal
Yeah but why do they charge so early?
Sounds like a scammy tactic.
Exactly! This is my problem with Nord. I honestly don’t hate their service and would have easily extended my subscription but the fact that they are following such deceptive renewal practices gives me a pause about their overall business practice.
That’s why I just blocked Nord from charging my card immediately after the first purchase, online banking rules.
The practices are a bit scammy, like when you go to their website, and they show you have no time and NEED to buy now, telling you all the ways that you are not safe online (which is true but they use it as a way to make you use a VPN).
But still, the service is excellent for the offers pricing at least. Split tunneling is perfect for many occasions.
After that 2 year offer if no good offer is shown to me I would just move to another service.
I got it for free after cash back two Black Fridays ago…. But my subscription expires this year. Which one do you recommend? It’s worked well for me and like that it has the apps for other devices.
Or just buy new deals before the subscription runs out and it will “top up” the subscription days.
