Is that VPN app on the Play Store safe? Google will now tell you.

Why are apps that aren’t safe allowed on the play store though?

If the VPN client isn’t a FOSS standalone apk file, then it’s a waste of everyone’s time.

VPNBros try to tell you they are all safer than no VPN

Unless you’ve paid for it, the answer is probably no

Because people don’t know how to work features their phone already has. So they download an app.

Wireguard kinda sexy ngl

More people need to see that Tom Scott VPN video. Its stupid that the ads are saying it “makes your connection secure” despite the fact that the S in HTTPS literally stands for that.

  1. Yes. 2. Even then not always.

The question here is who did the auditing.

Why does Play Store not have only trusted apps in the first place?

It is a battery killed on android though. Definitely turn it on/off as needed. I blame android’s design more than I blame wireguard in particular for the battery killing. Has to run as an always-on user space background app from what I can tell which keeps your phone awake all the time thus killing battery.

I still love it and use it all the time. I just make sure to turn it off before the phone goes in the pocket.

Different level of security, https encrypts the data going to websites, netadmins still can track the websites you connect too- plus, no HTTPS if you’re torrenting. VPNs meanwhile tunnel all data through the VPN, so that’s the only connection netadmins see (as always, this is where reputations come in as to whether the VPN snoops on your traffic).

And then there’s also VPNs to connect to specific networks (home/work).

It would certainly help with the “flashlight” apps that need your location, contact info and camera access that plague the frickin store

Never noticed this. I have wireguard setup with tasker to automatically enable every time I leave my home wifi and wireguard never even shows up on my battery list.

My device is old and stuck on Android 10. So that could be part of it too. I’d get a new one but that are so expensive for such small upgrades.

Look for refurbs (and make sure to cross reference with lineageos first)?
