I would not trust ZenMate in any case anymore

This weekend I setup Pi-Hole, a personal DNS adblocking using raspberry pi. I noticed that one of the top hits was to crm.zenguard.biz, which I traced back to ZenMate.

Even when not connected, the Mac App seems to ping the URL crm.zenguard.biz. The “CRM” in the name is what especially terrifies me, as who knows what data is being sent to a potential customer relationship database.

I have not tested on Windows. It does not seem to be pinging the CRM database using the Chrome extension, however it does seem to transmit data to random URLs like, “15.buchanan-williams-yellow.ml.”

They’ve confirmed this is true in a short Twitter convo, however they have not elaborated on the purpose: https://twitter.com/igobyterry/status/861528233212354564

I don’t know what it is doing. I primarily use ZenMate for the smart locations being an expat, however at this point I don’t trust it for any kind of web browsing.

So, you trusted a free VPN that’s not FOSS? Nice…

Any free VPN, you are the product.

That’s simply a given…
