How to hide NordVPN itself?

I was testing NordVPN at home country when IT guy suddenly said my logins were detected in France/USA in a day.

He said VPN is a security risk do don’t use it. This is what he said even though I didn’t see it in company policy:

“Because logins were redirected though nodes based abroad regions, your logins appear to come from France/us.”

I asked is VPN completely banned to which he said:

“We ask no vpns at all, routing work traffic through a non controlled VPN is a security risk”

Now can you even hide the fact that traffic is appearing to come from NordVPN?

I’m using GL.inet with repeater option as wireless router. Someone suggested to use ethernet cable, don’t know how viable that is
.

Obviously you leave your work laptop on at home. Then you set up a webcam aimed at the screen. Then you use a remote controlled robot to type on the keyboard.

I’m confused - is your company not based in France?

If not, why are you trying a French IP address? If it was just for testing then sorry mate, you’ve fucked up.

The only way you could possibly hide it is by using VPNS in the country you are in, but

a) Your IT person has said, “don’t” - that’s a clear instruction

b) That assumes they don’t know / have access to Nord VPN server IP addresses and recognise them.

I think you’re snookered unfortunately.

Edit: “snookered” means you’re fucked. English sporting term.

You can setup your own VPN server using the github scripts here (they have one for OpenVPN as well as wireshark)

https://github.com/Nyr/wireguard-install

https://github.com/Nyr/openvpn-install

Get a VPS based in UK and you can have complete control over it. Or you could even setup the server at your house in the UK and connect remotely to it.

You can setup the GL.iNet device to connect to the VPN. There’s a kill switch mode where if the VPN disconnects, it won’t send traffic. So your real IP won’t be leaked.

Delete it and get ExpressVPN. I lived in China for a few years, Nord didn’t work there China fully blocked them like many other VPNs. ExpressVPN makes it their business to work in China. China blocks them and they launch an update with in a few days unblocked themselves. I’m no longer in China but still use them to support their good work.

Also, it seems the IT guy knows you’re using a VPN because it’s linking to another country. Just use a VPN node in the same country and see if they still notice.

What I would love to know is could you connect to a company VPN via your own VPN (like NordVPN) to hide the fact that you’re working from another country?

I’m not sure I fully understand the question but I think you want to use VPN to appear at home while abroad? Since VPN is out you can use remote desktop. Best way would be a virtual desktop in AWS or Azure in your home country.

You rdp to there and have a local IP. Or leave your work laptop at home and set up TeamViewer or such to get in. Trouble is if it crashes you need someone to hit the power button for you.

If you work at a company that is so highly focused on detecting VPNs, then you will simply not be able to be a DN unless _maybe_ you are technically capable of setting up your own VPN and doing some other obfuscationary activities.

To be fair to your company though, employees with remote access are inherently risky. And those who travel abroad are even more risky. I don’t know the industry or company you are in, but it may be very reasonable for the company to be serious and cautious about this.

You may have to set aside your DN goals for now or change companies.

You need to set up a vpn tunnel, hardware(router
stationed in your home country) to hardware (router you travel with).

This is the best solution.

If you set it up right, your robot should also be undetectable by radar.

Raspberry Pi KVM

No need for webcam. It emulates keyboard, video, and mouse. You log into the pi and the pi shows you the screen and types/clicks on your behalf.

You can also but commercial KVMs, but they can get pricey

Lol what? Do you means remote access through teams?

I was downloading UK configuration but accidently ended up using France which strangely was named uk-fr.

Talked with another person he said server should be UK.

Company is in UK.

Just asked another it guy he said if server is set to UK it’s fine.

Does IT have the right to fire you? Can’t you go over their head?

I’m in data analyst field fairly remote jobs. But how would I find global employers?

Sorry for dumb question…

That’s the idiotic thing I did. It was after work hours and I changed configuration to France/USA. Forgot to turn off wifi connection on work laptop whilst I working on my personal laptop.

Tbh it shouldn’t be his concern if I am doing my router whatever. One can argue that others can be using vpn in my home, do i disable it for others then?

Apparently you need to have nordvpn app by itself installed. I just checked with surfshark they don’t have this issue.

vpn obfuscation is enabled by default on their servers. so isp wouldn’t even know if vpn if being used.

I have an excuse up my sleeve that vpn on the router is being used by other tenants so not entirely under my control lol

You could also run a VPN on your home network and VPN to home. Some routers have this or you could do it on a Raspberry Pi. No Nord IP address, just your home address.

Don’t know if Azure needs to be installed as installation is blocked on work laptop.
