Has anyone used Plex with the VPN service HidemyAss! (yes that really is its name) and been able to access their server remotely?

So as I investigate companies to use for a VPN this one separated itself from several others. They support port forwarding. They have live customer service people you can chat with. You can get a response in a timely matter. After a conversation with them it seems they would support what I am looking to do technically: install the VPN client on my router and forward the Plex port situated on my Synology NAS. But, I clearly don’t want to waste the time if this is going to cause a ton of headaches. If someone can chime in with their experience I would appreciate it.

Not used HMA for years (possibly decades), but you need a VPN that port forwards for it to work with PLEX. I’m assuming you are wanting to just keep PLEX running while doing something else through the VPN? There is no need to pipe PLEX through a VPN itself.

I run everything on my server through pia vpn apart from Plex. Works like a charm.

It’s insane to me that it’s 2019 and people still will use HMA… It provides nothing for you just takes your information

There isn’t really a need to use a VPN with Plex. It uses SSL so no one can see the data being streamed.

Use the vpn within a VM and it will have no effects to plex

isn’t all plex traffic encrypted?

I used to do this but found the speeds pretty miserable.

Private trackers resolve the basic need for a VPN though.

Had zero issues or concern over “did the VPN drop?”

I want to put everything else behind a VPN. I have a NAS that I would like to hide among other things.

In that case I would probably bypass the VPN for Plex so that you get the benefit of additional speed. Just route whatever else you need through it. I’m not saying that it can’t or shouldn’t be done with Plex. There just isn’t much of a need.
