This has saved our game as the lag became unbearable. I read some of the “Steam networking-friends only” solutions which did not work for us. We are currently playing a 3-player, simultaneous turns, Immortal Empire campaign.
Currently using a free Hamachi VPN, which players can self-host. The free server feature can have 5 connections, enough for our three-player game.
I am familiar with the service as I use it to play older PC games that have discontinued online services, such as Original Warcraft 3.
Anyone with lag issues should give it a go; just read about the product before trying. Worked for us, may work for others.
Game was unbearably laggy. I used hamachi and now it plays perfectly.
Thanks man.
Day 7; things are going well. We have each installed the new SFO Beta.
We had an issue where a player could not see the match. There were no manual changes. Was fixed by giving the physical and virtual networks the same priority values (Two other players fixed it, I do not know the details, but this was the explanation given).
Can confirm this solved the issue for my friends as well, thank you!
Could you explain this a little more to me? Like does the VPN host the game?
Hey brother I know this is 3 months old and you said you don’t know the details but did you ever figure anything out about how one player could not see the match in the LAN tab?
We downloaded hamachi and everything but when the owner of the hamachi network makes a game it doesnt show up for anyone. Not sure what the thing you mentioned about priority values means.
Would appreciate the help alot good sir!
of course! I’ll refer to our setup for context (I’ve just had my morning coffee, so bear with me)
Setting up the VPN:
- Each player downloads, installs and creates a “LogMeIn Hamachi” account and logs into the desktop application.
- The host player creates a new network; chooses a name and a password.
-
The free option allows for five connections, which facilitates our needs.
-
The default options for the created network work and we have not tested the other options.
-
The host player who created the network hosts the ‘Hamachi server’, a self-hosted Virtual Private Network (VPN, we are using it differently to how it is commonly advertised so bear with me here), much like a home network over the internet.
-
The host player will send the network name and password to the joining players so they can be added to the VPN.
-
Add the joining players to the VPN.
-
The joining players accept and should see the VPN within the hamachi interface of their PCs. A green icon will appear when successfully connected. All players are now on the same Network, much like a LAN. Because of this, all players are directly tunnelled to the host player, reducing any internet or steam intranet interference.
- The application has identified an issue if the icon is either Orange or Red.
Setting up the Total War Campaign:
-
The host player creates a Multiplayer Campaign, selecting the Local Network (LAN) tab at the top of the screen. Because all three players are on the VPN, they can join via the Local Network option.
-
The joining players will use the in-game Local Network game finder to locate the server and join.
- Unfortunately, there is no invite feature from the the host player’s menu.
- Once the joining players have found the campaign, they join as usual by double-clicking the camping within the game finder.
The VPN, in this context, is not used for the ‘Virtual privacy’ that it is most commonly advertised for. In actuality, a VPN, in many ways, is similar to a sizeable online Local Area Network.
In our situation, we are creating our own ‘VPN’ to decrease potential internet interference for our game, which has worked for the second day in a row.
Does their PC use wired and/or wireless regarding player hosting? We had an issue at one point where one player could not see the host games because their hamachi connection was prioritising wireless over the wired connection (this is my limited understanding).
Does hamachi identify any issues? i.e., blocked or limited connection? Usually indicated by the coloured circle to the left of the connection’s name.
This is the solution to lag. I have only tested it one battle so far, but we tested it with our resident lagger. When he is gone there is no lag, when he plays with us there is. With this setup there was absolutely 0 lag or freezes.
Yeah they use a wireless connection. However on the hamachi client itself its displaying ‘green’ and doesn’t mention any issues.
I set up the Hamachi, I am the host of the game in the LAN tab, but it doesnt show up at all for anyone.
“Was fixed by giving the physical and virtual networks the same priority values” On your original comment I was confused by this and wasn’t sure where I could change any values that sounded similar on hamachi.
This is asking alot but if you can help further with the LAN network stuff and hamachi I’d be glad to pay you for your time; me and my guys dont have much time together anymore.
Would be great if I had a different platform to message you on or show you exactly whats going on; but that’s asking alot for a stranger’s time. Would greatly appreciate that and of course, pay the difference.
