F-Secure Freedome VPN

Anyone know about this? Watched their add and because I’ve been somewhat concerned about privacy / info collecting, so I decided to take a look at their product. How effective are VPN’s and are there differences between different VPN services? I have little interest for using this for pirating, but I’m getting tired of Google and everyone else tracking my Internet usage.

The first differences that come into mind between most VPNs and Freedome is the background (we’re a publicly listed company with over 25 years of history, we’d never risk losing our clients’ trust), the anti-tracking features (in addition to being just a VPN, we’re also blocking malware and third party trackers) and the user interface (elegant, simple & works, incredibly easy to install - try it for yourself).

Also, we’re active on Reddit.

Disclosure: Hi, we’re Freedome VPN!

I note that there’s no Linux client, nor is one planned.

I use this on my android phone and it works great. What I know there isn’t any linux version (at least not yet), but there is also F-Secure Sense that is an (Wi-Fi)router with Freedome. Also it isn’t just a simple VPN service it also has some anti-malware technology and some other “F-secure things”

Two things: Firstly, when you enter a VPN, you’re automatically trusting whoever owns the VPN with your information. They get to see (should they choose to) all of your network traffic. I’m not saying Freedome VPN should not be trusted, but it’s something to consider. I personally run my own VPN to avoid this. Secondly, using a VPN will only stop certain aspects of tracking. Your location might be masked (depending on how sites determine your location), but as long as you still allow cookies to be stored on your device Google and others can still get to see your history etc.

Don’t know about that… Volkswagen has been listed since 1961. Did not keep them from screwing their clients.

That said, your offering sounds great and I will certainly have a look ;).

We don’t exactly need one. As long as their service can output NetworkManager friendly config files.

There are better options… Like AirVPN. They also have a multi-platform, GPL v.3 licensed client if that is something you really want.

The SENSE router doesn’t have a VPN yet, but it is definitely on the roadmap.

+1. AirVPN is great. Their feature set is second to none and they appear really serious about what they are doing. Others tend to agree: AirVPN Review (2025) | One of the most secure VPNs [4.4/5]

If you’re using a VPN because you don’t trust your ISP, you’re probably not achieving your goal.

Care to elaborate? Your VPN tunnel is between your end point and the VPN provider, and it is encrypted so your ISP can’t look into your traffic. Nor know what sites you visit. If you do VPN over ssl your ISP probably won’t even see that you are using VPN. So what’s there to trust regarding your ISP?

It only takes care of your untrustworthy ISP.

That’s what I said. I responded to your previous statement which I thought was not accurate:

If you’re using a VPN because you don’t trust your ISP, you’re probably not achieving your goal.

The reason I am looking at my own ISP first is that it’s the only one who necessarily knows my full identity (name, billing address and so on). Other hops in the chain do not. Of course you’re right to imply that encrypted connections/SSL are still required whether you go VPN or not.
