Does my VPN extend to connected devices?

I live in a remote area where cellphone hotspots and wired tethering are my means for an access point. My VPN service is loaded up and running on said cellphone. Now if I turn on my Hotspot and connect my tablet to it is my tablet spoofed? Or do I need to load up the VPN service on the tablet as well? I wasn’t sure if that was double kill (me being paranoid).

Tethering will come from your regular data plan, not from the VPN connection.

If you are on Android, there are apps like “VPN Hotspot” which can do what you want. Pretty sure on iOS you’re out of luck and you’d have to run the VPN on the tablet.

What kind of phone do you have?

I found this online: Android prevents other devices from sharing its VPN tunnel. If you connect your Android to a VPN and then share its connection to another device, the other device will not be routed through the same VPN tunnel as your Android device. Instead, it will use your native ISP connection.

Most android VPNs run in the application userspace of the linux kernel. This means your tethering and your android UI are independent of one another.

I appreciate you. Just to clarify. My Hotspot wifi is not going through my phones protocols (the VPN service) it’s broadcasting straight from (through?) my cellphone provider? Which in turn could give my location? I can load my vpn up on my tablet no problem but I’ll remember the “VPN host” for the future.

I ask this because I found out my wifi extender can give a location history too. I’m exploring a few different things because it seems everything is giving off some kinda location.

Thank you. I’m trying to teach myself about modern electronics and how to protect myself on the internet as well as have fun building things.

I have a flagship Samsung Galaxy so it’s android OS. What’s funny is my modern phone has more power and capabilities than my old laptop rig haha so Im exploring DeX mode a little bit.

Knowledge is power. But could you eli5? Linux kernel? Furthest I’ve gone in that direction of understanding was raspberry pi first then I’d look at Linux.

Yeah the VPN running on the phone won’t affect the tethering data at all. Quick intuitive test: turn off VPN, turn on hotspot, go to icanhazip.com on the tablet. Note the IP. Turn on the VPN, reconnect to hotspot. Check icanhazip.com from the tablet again.

Your phone and tablet also have GPS (probably), which isn’t affected by a VPN at all.

I mean that if you run a VPN on your android mobile, your mobile will be VPN’d, but if you also do a mobile hotspot, those hotspot devices will not be behind a VPN.

It’s like you have a 6th sense friend because I have also been wondering how to double check that my vpn is actually working and not just reply on what the vpn provider says. 3rd party is definitely needed here.

Im pretty sure it was another device initially connected to the wifi extender that got it to register a location.
