Do VPN's actually work for streaming?

I have the worst internet ever and I was recently looking into paying for a VPN. Do VPN’s actually improve internet speeds so that I can actually stream online games @ 720P with no lag???

Say that your ISP ‘x’ is only using some network called “floridaNet” for it’s upstream and only peers with HurricaneElectric (HE). You do a speedtest to ISP ‘x’ and get 1gbps/down and 500mbps/up - but if you speed test to twitch you only get 20mbps/down and 2mbps/up — what gives?

Look at twitch’s network… they get upstream bandwidth from backbone providers… Cogent, XO, Level3, etc… and peer with other providers, NTT, Telia,Telstra, etc…

You hear about this new datacenter opening up 5-10 miles away, and they get a blend of Level3, Cogent, XO, HE… they even peer with floridaNet… You get a server in this facility and run a VPN on it. Now, you speed test to your server, and get 1gbps/down and 500mbps/up - WOW! then you speedtest from the server to twitch, and get the same max speed from the server, because it’s on a better network with direct routes to the same providers twitch uses…

NOW, your VPN would basically let you use more of your bandwidth to twitch because you adjusted your route… and passed it through a location that directly connected to your ISP ‘x’ and twitch.

In almost every other case, a VPN would put more of a restriction on your connection… Say you live in NYC and get a VPN in Houston… with a solid ISP with good links and peering it would normally operate near full capacity… but unless you have a poor quality ISP and find a facility that links the ISPs network to a bigger/better network; you should expect degraded performance.

Side note:
I’ve seen people from the NJ/NY area (using Comcast) use the Twitch ingest in NYC… only to realize the ping to Virginia was lower… after a quick traceroute you see for the user to reach the NYC ingest… the packets go from NJ to NY to VA then back to NY on another provider… so to talk to a computer in NY they always passed through VA… so cutting off the trip back to NY… and VA becomes the better option for a ingest.

TL;DR The internet and its routing is a very complex place; you usually don’t want to add any hops in your route.

No.

What they can improve is connections and ping times in situations where your ISP is dropping the ball. What it won’t do is give you more bandwidth.

Streaming requires bandwidth and a steady connection. The VPN might be able to help with the connection, but it cannot give you more bitrate to work with.

Vpn won’t make it better. But it will change routing and it may be more optimal for your situation. You can also try restream - will make basically the same thing as a vpn but for stream only without tunneling your whole traffic.

Your money would be better spent upgrading your internet connection if possible, Contact your ISP and see if there is a better package.

VPN’s add more hops to your traffic so it would inevitably make it even slower.

Try downsizing your output resolution and stream at 30fps with 3000bit rate. This still produces a nice quality stream. I do this and nobody complains!

Beautiful way of putting it. Would guild if I had gold.

Im not very good with this sort of stuff but I think what you are trying to say is yes VPN’s do work??? Haha correct me if I am wrong

No the money is better spend on a Computer lesson.

OP needs to learn the basics. Judging by this post OP doesnt know anything pc related.

Basically I’m saying that in a very rare care, it’s possible that it could help. Under normal circumstances, a VPN will not improve your connection quality.
