Hello, I received and installed an Xfinity gateway modem in order to avoid the usage overage charge which I installed during the holidays since I was out of work. Now that I am back to work I am having issues with our corporate vpn where it frequently disconnects throughout the day, this has been happening for the past several days since coming back to work after holiday. It happens many times an hour and it is very disruptive.
I have a constant ping to 8.8.8.8 and another ping to an internal server in the corporate network. Whenever the vpn disconnects I never lose ping to 8.8.8.8 but I do lose ping to internal server. So I know it’s not an Xfinity service issue
I am part of the IT dept and have confirmed with our network engineer that there are no issues with our vpn and we would have issues with 300+ users that rely on our vpn to connect to corporate resources.
I changed the network on the xfinity gateway from 10.0.0.1 to 192.168.0.1 thinking that maybe 10.0.0.1 might be having issues with a similar vlan in our network but that didn’t fix it. I have also restarted the modem using the xfinity app.
In the past I remember reading about ISPs having to allow vpn connections or things of that sort for a vpn connection to work properly, is this the case here? I would love to TALK to someone in support but gettinga live human is impossible when calling in since the voice prompt wants to send me to the app or to chat.
Note prior to the Xgw I was using my own motorolla modem with a google wifi router and I had zero issues with my vpn.
Thanks.
edit - searching vpn on the forum, someone was advised to check Gateway > Firewall IPv4 security level and it’s currently set to Minimum Security (Low).
Minimum Security (Low)
LAN-to-WAN : Allow all.
WAN-to-LAN : Block as per below and enable IDS.
IDENT (port 113)
edit2: also to add that if I jump on my mobile’s hotspot I have ZERO issues with the vpn connection, it does not disconnect.

u/seetheare thank you for using the Xfinity Subreddit to reach out regarding your VPN connectivity concerns. I would be happy to assist you with a bit of troubleshooting with this issue to ensure we have you back up and running. Have you already attempted to test the VPN using a hardwired connection?

This is an automated response.
Are you the only one out of 300+ users with Xfinity service using the rented gateway?
Have you worked with your network team to try to resolve these issues? They would involve looking at the logs on client and server end for your individual VPN connection to determine what is going on.
Failing that, do you even know what sort of VPN technology is in use?
no I have not, it’s a bit difficult with the setup I have. I understand you’re trying to rule out a wireless issue, but again I had zero issues with my prior equipment which is in the same location as the Xgw. Are there any known vpn issues with Xfinity modems? something that needs to be enabled on your end?
and to reiterate, I have no issues with internet, it’s the vpn that keeps disconnecting me. I never lose a ping to 8.8.8.8 when I get randomly disconnected from the vpn.
many others have comcast service and others in my team have an xfinity gateway and have no vpn issues.
this is not a corporate network vpn issue,
u/seetheare I appreciate those additional details, and would like to take a closer look at things on our end to see if there is anything that may need to be adjusted on our end. Can you send me a modmail with your full name and complete service address to locate your account on our end?
It could be a configuration issue. Have you tried to disable Xfinity xFi Advanced Security?
Also it could be an issue with your device dropping the wifi connection for e.g. so not really a VPN issue but a wifi issue. The VPN just drops with the connection.
Recommend working with your network team to sort out the problems. Maybe try ethernet cable if you are unwilling to do so.
