Certain students of ITI1120 have been busted for cheating off of Chegg

certain students of ITI1120 have been busted for cheating off of Chegg

From a r/Professors post this year:

Here’s the information Chegg will give you through an official investigation.

Those who posted questions under their names, especially those who have posted using accounts affiliated with their uOttawa emails, have to be concerned. Based off this, those that simply browse Chegg are not at risk, but who knows if that’s their universal approach.

It’s important to note that this is a com sci class so most likely these students copy and pasted someone else’s code for these assignments. This is highly frowned upon in the computer science classes I’ve taken, even if you do an assignment with a group of friends and copy each other’s code. It’s easy to detect that. In something like the sciences or math it is a lil harder to detect as most answers will be very similar or the same

I’m surprised Vida left out (purposely or not) the possiblity of getting expelled from the faculty of engineering as a form of acadmic penalty. If she really want to set the first-years scared straight.

Imagine getting busted for cheating on assignments smh. If you’re going to cheat, don’t use post the question using your student email…

Bruh if u gonna cheat atleast be smart about it chegg is last place to use lol wtf

If you’re cheating in ITI 1120 just drop the program, honestly it’s one of the easiest courses you’ll need to take in the faculty of engineering and vida is a very good teacher.

As someone who has taken Ontario ICS3U and ICS4U with C++, the course is a breeze but I can say it’s definitely one of the hardest courses, if not, the hardest course to understand for beginners from logical thinking to syntax to concepts. And I think the reason it’s more difficult then, say, Chemistry, is because for the majority of the world, it’s a brand new concept!

That being said, there’s no excuse for cheating. While ITI1120 is one of the hardest courses for beginners, it’s also the course with the most help available. You got TWO virtual office hours from your prof, TWO OTHER virtual office hours on Saturday and Sunday from two TAs, a study group on MS Teams, the engineering mentoring centre, and a student volunteer who gives up an hour of her Saturday to help out others - not to mention recorded lectures since it’s COVID.

Those are just help offered by the university!! Programming help, especially Python, has some of the largest and fastest growing communities on the internet and one could argue that the (free) online lessons/help are even better than the university’s. AND, there are Discord study groups where fellow students give free help!

So yes, it’s hard. But resource is available. Yes, you need to sacrifice lots and lots and lots of leisure time to study, you might even have to sacrifice your other courses to focus on ITI, but that’s reality. And at the end of the day, you’re wasting your own money and time.

Rip to the first years in that class lmao. They’re probably shitting themselves.

If you need to cheat in ITI1120 how tf do you think you’ll succeed in a computing degree

Omfg I feel so bad for those kids… rip

I don’t understand cheaters… literally change some variable names and you would have an original solution that you can say was your solution.

Literally copying/pasting is the stupidest way of cheating.

Thou shall not cheat.

Yeah, if you cheated I feel no sympathy for you. I am so tired of all these cheating scandals. It creates such a headache for everyone and if it happens often enough it will tarnish the reputation of these degrees. Literally the exact same thing happened in ITI1100 over the summer. If you don’t want to do the work do everyone (including yourself) a favour and drop out because it will only get harder.

I’m in my second year. I had shit marks last year due to health issues but instead of cheating to try and pass I dropped courses there was no hope in and tried my best in the ones I didn’t drop. I still haven’t fixed everything yet and I’m retaking some first year courses now to fix my GPA and provide an actual foundation for the more advanced classes for which these classes are prerequisites for. Meanwhile you clowns are making everyone else look bad and having no respect for the work from the students who are trying. Please get it together and take accountability for your actions.

Honestly if you need to cheat in ITI 1120 you’re not cut out for CS, SEG, CEG, or whatever programs require it, just drop out.

Well use a virtual credit card and fake username!
Internet makes it easy to cover up your track.

lol, imagine having to use Chegg to pass iti1120

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if professors willingly upload wrong answers to questions to see who cheated.

Interesting you mention this because it’s against their terms of service to intentionally answer questions incorrectly, although it’s probably not enforced since it’s pretty hard to figure out if it was done intentionally or not.

That being said, even if you don’t have a professor who goes out of his way to catch you cheating, most Chegg tutors are students or new grads and they can make mistakes. The tutoring service is really just meant for ungraded homework.

I disagree with the first sentence. Chegg can be very resourceful and useful in getting easy marks on assignments or even exams. Although I don’t recommend it for any program related courses, it is very smart to use it for electives or things that are irrelevant to you. Why struggle for a good mark in a random elective when you can use chegg to get an even higher mark and focus on your important classes? I don’t think anyone is an idiot for using chegg, and you just have to be smarter when using it (fairly easy to not get caught). Some of you sound so bitter when others are getting free marks, just worry about yourselves lmao.

According to that they don’t give out payment information but in the email OP posted they apparently do.
