I used to be able to connect through VPN so I can get the casino content (wheel spin, gambling). Now I can’t do that. It just says Failed to download progress data when I try to get to online. I play on PC and use Proton VPN
It is possible that the VPN’s IP address is blocked, temporarily or permanently, by Rockstar’s servers, possibly from too many people using it to connect to the GTA Online at the same time.
Pretty sure this is because of the new security protocol they implemented on PC. Could cause issues like this depending on how your VPN forwards ports.
Oh, so it looks like it doesn’t recognize your location. Maybe then just try logging into social club website on vpn, this maybe help? I had some issues long time ago with free protonvpn, it made the NAT strict and there were connectivity problems
I’m trying to figure out how it works. If my VPN is on, I can’t get online at all. I’ve tried excluding Rockstar and SocialClub apps for my VPN to ignore, but it says I have to play the storymode prologue to continue. If seen people post that problem here too. I think the cloud saves may be associated with the player’s IP address, and if the VPN switches to an IP that doesn’t match with the cloud save, the Rockstar servers can’t connect you to your game data. That’s my theory and I could be completely wrong. I can’t find any info online to support or oppose this idea. It could be something entirely else, such as related to different VPN brands.
