Brave VPN just auto-installed and enabled itself?

hey any idea how to know if this happened to me? cause I didn’t get any notification or anything

God bless you Buddy!

regedit is good. I instead disabled the Brave VPN Wireguard Service in Task Manager, Startup. For good measure I also opened Services.msc and Disabled both of these:

Brave Vpn Service (BraveVpnService)Brave Vpn Wireguard Service (BraveVpnWireguardService)

None of them got re-enabled after a reboot.

Windows should not install VPN services until VPN is purchased/enabled · Issue #33726 · brave/brave-browser · GitHub all is explained here, they will fix this in a future update.

Even worse on their own website help support. They Answer with a shitty response that doesnt fix sht, then close the thread before anyone else can help out. I uninstalled, Firefox is better anyway. Doesnt pull this sht. I have expressvpn, i dont need this sht showing on a reboot too.

*Edit: Path to disable Service clarified.

Win 10 Desktop:
Turned it off in Settings-> Brave VPN (never turned it on myself) and restarted Brave. Off in the settings afterward but still active startup entry in Task Manager. Restarted PC and still turned on. Proceeded to disable it in the Task Manager.

Disabled via Task Manager ->Startup->Brave VPN Wireguard Service->Status: (Select Disable).
Restarted PC, still off in settings and still disabled in Task Manager.

you’re assuming brave will undo the shit they put on your system, just because you disabled it in the settings? ahah

thanks for that. i followed your instructions, disabled the wireguard protocol and now by browser is flying. i use another vpn and i think the two working at the same time really slowed everything down. i hadn’t thought of looking there. good job.

There was no Brave VPN when I installed Brave. Updates are automatic and give no notice.

It isn’t malware, but the poster is saying that it might as well be malware since it is forcing services on your pc through auto updates. I am not a fan of software that appears without my knowledge.

I think I will have to uninstall as well.

I couldn’t run call of duty because of it lol. I was confused as well because I had no recollection of installing the vpn. Deleted the files tough

Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+ESC), Startup Tab. Do you see Brave VPN Wireguard Service enabled? If so, yes. Right click it and Disable.

and 4 months later still nothing, what a scumbag move, uninstalled

I disabled it in Services.msc

No I don’t. You are completely wrong.

i suggest you follow his advice. or don’t. but you should. (windows/linux dual booter here).

No there not 100% in his head…
I had this issue on Windows, thinking why is my internet “Laggy” - Like micro stutters, in traffic while playing games, it went on for a few days, and I couldn’t figure out why, seemingly as if it was in my head…

Then I did some google searching, and it was returning results in Japanese???
Which after digging deeper, I found Braves VPN had activated itself. I turned it off and disabled it, still the issue was there, Okay can’t be Brave then right?

WRONG! - Just Installed Linux, Fresh last night, Installed Brave, Guess what no VPN option on brave in settings, so you think your all good and clear… WRONG! - Search results returning in Japanese AGAIN!, furthermore, On steam it even thinks I’m in Japan now… It’s not even their VPN, they change your system proxy settings in the background without permission.

So the micro stutter in lag is very much there, and real, your speeds will show the same, Hell you IP shows the same, But everywhere thinks your in JAPAN.

That is some of the worst shit I’ve seen a company do,

It shouldnt be happening in the first place, doesnt matter if its ‘explained’. Are we on a beta browser with beta feature opt-in?

If people feel like Brave is trying to do something sneaky then they should just use a different browser. If I thought Brave was trying to do something sneaky, I would find a different job.

Is this your definition of “took that critisism well”? You should raise your standard a bit.

Idk how well they can take the criticism if they still do it. I’m a new user and it didn’t mention anything about a vpn before, during or after installation. Not 5 minutes of running it and my laptop suddenly turned off (I accept it could’ve been coincidence, but that has NEVER happened to me. I’ve had a couple of blue screens, but never a sudden shut down), and when I boot it back up, boom, vpn in my start up apps.
