When you post things like that, you really should explain both what and why. WHY should people turn it off?
or Plex Relay, which is also not great but at least better than nothing
yeah I can’t even access my router, they’re assholes like that
oh I have a gtx 1080 right now so I have that covered, sorry misread your first comment
A network mask tells the computer or application the IP address range that’s considered part of a subnet.
Wait so, in this example, if wanted to set this up I’d have to use my_ip_number/255.255.255.0?
UPnP allows any device on your network to open any port it wants without authentication. Any smart lightbulb you buy on temu could just open up a bunch of ports and make you and your data incredibly vulnerable. Programs on trusted PCs can do the same.
Because of this, it’s recommended to turn it off if at all possible, as it’s basically the same as giving every stranger you meet a key to your front door.
255.255.255.0 would be a complete subnet x.x.x.0-255 if you want a single IP only, it would be 255.255.255.255
Most people would just add their conplete local LAN Subnet.
UpnP setting, is it a router setting? Many ISPs don’t even allow you touch/configure their modem/routers.
But how is that different from openning a door like someone has suggested?
Yeah I’m sorry but you lost me, thanks anyway
Yes it’s a setting in your router, yes it is often on by default from your ISP, no some ISPs don’t let you touch it.
Ultimately, it’s a flaw in a network but at the same time everyone using the major ISP in Canada has it on by default and they’re all fine so who knows.
Just one of those things people like to warn about is all.
At this point y’all just need to do some googling, I’ve shared all I know.
Any known downsides if I find the setting and turn it off? Like, any obvious services rely on UPnP? I have some IoT devices at home. Maybe they’ll stop working?
They wouldn’t stop working, upnp is only needed to open the port, once the port is open it will stay open regardless or upnp being off.
This probably depends on the router so maybe RTFM to be safe, but in my experiences that’s how it works.
Thanks for taking time to answer. Much appreciated
