I downloaded 8 VPN apps on my iPhone before came to Shanghai… and only two works

astrill is your best bet currently.

Hotspot Shield ( I have Premium version) also didn’t work as of last week using any of the major (US, UK, Hong Kong, even the China node) country nodes.

Some VPNs do not work well on iPhone due to Apple store policies.

I’m glad to see number 8 on your list though, I would much rather pay their fees as they are quite reasonable. Number 7 can go do one… ridiculously expensive.

Express VPN doesn’t work on any of my devices. I am using T mobile (US) cellular data (free, but doesn’t work if I want to watch YouTube or Netflix) which is included in my monthly plan.

I’ve been using surfshark for a week straight now. Never lost connection. Really fast connection and works great. Your “information” is incorrect.

Astril is working fine for me the last year.
I switched because NordVPN didn’t work for a solid year, probably still doesn’t but I can be bothered to try.

I have been using SquirrelVPN for months now. It’s cheap and it always works.

And what about letsvpn

LetsVPN

I learned this through experimenting with other service providers. This was by far the best. It’s cheap and reliable. In terms of privacy/safety, for memory they don’t sell your data.

I was 3 weeks in Shanghai and now back in EU. Surfshark worked very good. Sometimes I need to renew the VPN but it also works very good. Take care that you don’t activate more then one VPN. It won’t work if you activate more then one.

Try to use WireGuard, though you will need to find instructions on how to install it properly

get a HK data sim in HK as a backup

Can you create your own and create a AWS instance in Virginia as a gateway to the Internet?

The thing with VPNs is that it’s so difficult to find a good one. And when you do, you can’t tell too many people. The more people use. The more likely it’s gonna get shut down

Try warp+ by cf, it’s not a VPN but can provide similar function, and cf operates legally in China

Geph is another reliable service provider, with SLA guarantee, based in EU, has their own open source anti-censor tunneling protocol.

Best thing I can recommend you doing is getting chinacom HK (hong kong) esim which you can get for $9 for 9gb, but you need to register on their site. mycuniq (android app) then buy the esim.

its unblocked

I have tried most of the ones from the list and then some. I have settled on one that beats them all by far better than anything. VPN.AC - it’s a bit clunkier of an interface, but my goodness is it reliable and effective, not to mention good price.

Can you recommend any good subscriptions?

this sounds kinda sus, can they not read your traffic? Just something to keep in mind I guess if it is the case.
