Does Google VPN do anything

It does what any VPN does

Prevents you from having another VPN that actually does something useful like blocking ads.

It gives Google better access to filtering through your data. What a great “feature”

It makes your device much slower. Most websites wont work anymore, Google Voice wont load. Just about everything you want it for will suddenly stop working the way you want it to. Sites loads 1000% slower (I timed it), and most of the time you just end up forgetting what you were looking for anyway.

So yes, it is very useful if you have a phone addition and need a way to ween yourself off the convenience of instant information

Networks that aggressively block VPN’s…

ProtonVPN works fine for me in China. I’ve spent about 8 weeks in the country already this calendar year and plan to spend another 2 before the year ends.

Google VPN on the other hand does not.

So I’d argue it depends.

Oh that’s cool and how do you get your phone in your name

Nevermind I figured it out

You can use all those services safely anyway, everything uses HTTPS. Don’t believe YouTube AD spots that get YouTubers to reel off bullshit to scare people into subscribing.

Is it worth using it if I’m just using mobile data?

Sure if your in the year 2000. Every age uses HTTPS already so all your traffic is encrypted.

That said, if you’re getting it for free, you should definitely use it.

I was kinda with you until then.

A VPN is only as good as the provider. Google doesn’t exactly have a brilliant track record when it comes to the data they collect on their users and the transparency by which they do.

When you use your VPN in a coffee shop with less secure WiFi, you’re basically just switching who you trust; you either give all your browsing data to Google or you give it all to the coffee shop / creepy dude in the corner with a laptop. Admittedly I know what I’d prefer in that situation but it isn’t always quite as cut and dried as that.

I’m not saying don’t use it, I’m not saying don’t use a VPN generally, I’m not saying there aren’t uses for both free and paid-for services. But I think it’s important for people to understand what a VPN actually does and crucially what it isn’t. As the other poster said in another comment, lots of sponsor spots on YouTube really oversell the benefits of having one.

Yes, it’s now a free bonus feature for Pixel devices only (7+).

I still have the VPN it’s in quick settings on p7p

Weird, I never would’ve guessed that. Most mainstream VPNs (client-based) are just starting to implement v6, very slowly (for good reason, it’s not the simple remap of v4…). I guess 6to4 is easier though, your address is still abstracted behind the v4.

Yes I have it on now with T-Mobile

According to a few things I’ve read, no. They won’t collect, track, or log data specific to you.

I doubt it my adds are so random

That’s interesting. The Google VPN never does that for me. I wonder if it’s because I’m in CA.

It’s not for subscribing anymore, they removed that one. You get it just because you have a Pixel.
