Why should ProtonVPN users have to upgrade to ProtonVPN Plus to access specific servers that allow them to use streaming services like Netflix and Hulu if Nord and Express already do this just with their base price?

Proton offers two plans, unlike basically all other VPN services that just offer one plan. From an annual pricing standpoint:

Basic is at $4 per month, about the same price as most of the “cheap” VPNs on the market, but has more limited functionality (no Secure Core, no Netflix, Hulu, etc, streaming support).

Plus at $8 per month comes with all advanced functionality supported by default.

The idea of having a cheaper Basic Plan is to make ProtonVPN accessible to more people by also having a lower price point.

The question here is really why is ProtonVPN more expensive. It’s really a matter of quality and security. If you are shopping for a phone, you can buy a Huawei for $100 or an iPhone for $1500. Both connect you to the internet and allow you to make calls, but there are major differences in how the devices are engineered, secured, and the amount of trust you have in the phone as a result.

Proton isn’t in the business of being the cheapest option on the market. We are in the business of being the most secure, private, and trustworthy, and that usually means not cutting corners to save money wherever possible. This comes at a higher price, as explained in more detail here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/dz6cig/thinking_of_switching_to_protonvpn_from_pia/f863tem/

First of all, Nord and Express are shady as hell. They pay off VPN reviewers to recommend their product. The IPs that Proton uses for services such as Netflix or Hulu have to be kept really clean and there has to be active work in order to maintain them. This all adds to cost that has to be forwarded to the consumer (they can’t operate at a loss of course). Their servers also cost more as they always use bare-metal servers.

Protonvpn is a premium service. Don’t expect to get a quality of service when you pay 2 euro a month elsewhere. Most of the stuff you won’t notice but good payment for employees, a good security and update concept or the rent of only real / metal servers are all components which are impotent for security.

Protons focus for vpn is for security, if you just want to get Netflix access you can use other von services. But I would never use this cheap vpns for important / sensitive operation.

By the way I work in it security and administration, so I understand something about stuff like that.

The last point is that they are more transparent about their company, their investors and their owner. Nordvpn only has a mailbox in the claimed office. They operate from a different country.

By the way we pay with our premium service for other user which don’t have money, so they can use the free server. This always in focus for me, yes the company makes money but they also want to help / ist a free and secure service.

Well, are you sure those stream services work? Amazon US doesn’t, the other may not allow foreign CCs as payment… look at Disney…

There are codes for up to 75% off NordVPN plan all year around. They cost about 4€/month.

PROTON price is 3.17 EUROS for 3 Year… way below PROTON.

I didn’t even knew that the PROTON’s basic plan would not include STREAMING :\
