The question is two-fold. First, I want to hear why people feel it is important that they use a VPN for their use case. Second, why do people view ProtonVPN as their best option?
Thanks!

VPN for “privacy.”
Proton based on friend’s recommendations after Pia and Surfshark both became unstable and basically unusable (connection and config issues, along with absolute crap support for the paid products).
Proton overall has let me set it and forget about it, which is what I want from a utility.
downloading linux iso’s. Port forwarding and speed it the major thing
I use VPN to promote my work to the United States because that’s my target audience.
I would fall into what’s considered “middle low” class and currently I don’t have a job so I can’t afford to pay for a VPN, plus every service valued in USD makes it extremely expensive due to the inflation of my country. Thanks to protonVPN I can get access to a VPN that’s not only free but also safe. I feel extremely grateful to the people working on protonVPN for allowing people like me to get access to internet protection and region changing. And someday when I get money to afford it I’ll pay it back to them because they deserve it.
I use it for privacy and protection. When I’m travelling having a VPN is a must. When I’m downloading Linux ISOs the added protection is a must. I tend to now always have the VPN on regardless just for the added privacy. Websites track you in various ways and your IP is one of those.
Why this one? It’s performant, it’s secure & I believe in the proton team. Is it the fastest? Probably not. Is it the most stable? Not in my experience, although it’s been much better for the last few months.
To add to this the proton team seem decent, they don’t seem to care about maximising profits, but rather they seem to care about privacy and security.
I also use the rest of the proton services to get the best value for money. Proton pass with proton mail allowing me to use email aliases is a top notch feature for the same reasons, privacy and security.
I use ProtonVPN because of it’s strong record with privacy, being based on Switzerland, and the fact it comes with the whole Proton package if you get Unlimited or Family.
I would never use a VPN provider based in a 14 eyes country.
It’s also fast and supports port forwarding and WireGuard.
Strong support for nearly every platform is another reason in of it’s own self.
I was also already a user of Proton Mail, so there’s that.
I use ProtonVPN to encrypt my traffic when not at home and sometimes when I am. That’s all I can say.
I use ProtonVPN on my Mac 24/7 because I trust them more than my ISP, the connection is stable, fast and it‘s making it more difficult for services to track me.
On my phone it‘s IVPN because I want custom DNS and Proton is not offering this in their iOS app. For my Mac this is no issue since I mostly use the internet in my hardened Firefox which uses my custom DNS config anyways.
Privacy. Because it’s independent of big tech, open source, third party review, pass all the privacy tests (no logs policy, has its own DNS, etc.) AND it’s easy to use (good apps in different platforms). Also, the ecosystem (mail, cloud, calendar, pass manager) helps a lot.
I’ve got nothing to hide… and my ISP doesn’t need to know what I look at on the internet
I try using nord and express. Nord I’m having huge reliability issues with slow connection and sometimes not connecting. Express is good for a long time but expensive.
Proton is reliable enough while with good enough speed
I live in Cuba, 99% of cool services are blocked in my country
Because some YouTuber said, that I’m more secure with a VPN /s
General privacy and some extra security if using any sort of public wifi. Proton, because I had started having some issues with my previous VPN and Proton had good reviews and I prefer them and knew about them already.
VPN for privacy and access content that is blocked in my country like right now Twitter is blocked in my country
Why I use a VPN:
Why proton specifically:
I was using Surfshark. Had 2 year subscription. It was okay. During those two years I began switching to Proton services with VPN included, so I said goodbye to Surfshark. Proton seems much better, though. Never had any problems with it while Surfshark wasn’t very stable.
Worth mentioning is that I have Proton configured on Linux with OpenVPN, so I don’t use any clients - it just starts automatically as a daemon on system startup.
Protonmail was in an episode of Mr. Robot a few years ago and the rest was history
I use a VPN primarily for privacy and security reasons. It helps keep my online activities private, protects my data from hackers, and prevents ISPs from tracking my browsing habits. Additionally, it allows me to access content that might be geo-restricted in my region, which is great for streaming and other services.
I chose ProtonVPN specifically because of its strong focus on privacy. It’s developed by the same team behind ProtonMail, which has a stellar reputation for security. ProtonVPN has a strict no-logs policy, meaning they don’t track or store my online activities. They also offer Secure Core servers, which route traffic through multiple servers to add an extra layer of security. Plus, ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland, which has strong privacy laws, providing additional peace of mind. Overall, ProtonVPN offers a great balance of security, privacy, and performance, making it my top choice.
I use the most so att at home or on my phone doesn’t throttle YouTube
I was a surfshark user, found that there are many VPN names but one private company rules them all, and they are not trustworthy in privacy! So came to Proton
VPN is essential to keep your browsing in private, in home or out of the home like public WiFi
