Why do some apps work with a VPN and some apps don’t?

For one but not the only example, there’s an app I use to control a light over wifi that doesn’t work over VPN which is interesting.

Not really a problem, disconnect if need be, fiddle with light, VPN back on again.

You probably have local connections/devices blocked within the VPN options. (Printers etc).

Don’t know which VPN you are using, but find & uncheck the option and it should work fine. You could also use the split tunneling option to permanently stop that specific app from using the VPN altogether.

Interested to hear what others say about this because I’ve been looking into a VPN for daily fantasy sports. From everything I’ve read, it seems like people haven’t been successful with them for one reason or another.

Bank of America app won’t allow a vpn, quite the joke

Some services don’t allow certain VPNs unfortunately. See the discussion here about the best vpn services.

It doesn’t?

I can see why they’d do it but still BS.

I hope the BoA app is at least encrypted itself.

I think it has something to do with compliance/anti-fraud, or similar. But, yes! I know several banking and payment sites/services that don’t work if you’re connected to a VPN… It’s more than counter intuitive and reduces user security. I raised several complaints over this problem with several services to no avail.

A VPN doesn’t add more security if you’re on an encrypted website using https. It just hides your true IP address, which some websites see as a potential threat, as they look for proxies. On unsecured networks, a VPN does add security by encrypting your wide-open connection.

You are absolutely right. However, I use a VPN 24/7 if connected to the internet in order to improve and enhance my online security. This forces me to maintain a separate browser not using the VPN for this exclusive use (which inand of itself is not a bad thing, but certainly a pain).
