What’s the benefit of using the browser extension if I have the desktop app installed???
You could play a game on a server on one country and browser the net in another?
I use the desktop app when I’m torrenting but for gamjng convenient to keep it off and use the browser extension
I had an issue where AMazon video would not allow me to surf while I was on the VPN. A fix I found on another thread was using the extension in the same browser. It worked
Fast country switching in the browser. But bewarned it uses 1 device slot.
Security wise it’s worse cause its only a proxy.
The browser extension is to cut through any censorship or location sensitive media/data at the same time masking your actual IP address. However, with the Browser App, the data from the ISP to your end is not encrypted and therefore expose to ISP. Thus if the ISP wants to, they can look into what you are surfing/watching/communicating.
Desktop Apps on the other hand, encrypt all the way starting from your PC to the ISP, finally to VPN servers. ISP will not know what data is being communicated between your PC and the VPN servers. However, the VPN servers if they choose to, can see your data communicated, so you are entrusting your VPN to uphold your privacy.
In addition, there is split tunneling feature in the desktop app that allows you to control which software/games/apps are allowed to go through VPN and which stays connected normally without VPN. For instance, if you want to watch Netflix Japan on secondary screen and play some easy non demanding steam game like Tower defense. U can fire up Desktop app and assign the Netflix to go through VPN, and yet your game is connected the usual way without VPN. U can also at the same time add your favorite browser to the split tunneling to ensure Vpn connection with or without the browser extension on or off. Choice is yours, but do take note it will be slower depending on your PC country of origin and VPN servers that you connecting to.
Hope the above helps.
The chrome extension holds a steadier connection in my opinion.
I had to use the desktop app because Nord keeps blocking any Microsoft Store apps that require an internet connection to work and the app blocks access to my NAS and all other network machines even with the invisibility on Lan set to off or using split tunneling.
But you can just use split tounneling for that reason
Alright, that’s valid!
Right? That seems like the logical answer.
Those are good points. More specifically though, there’s no benefit to being connected to a VPN through the desktop app and the browser extension at the same time, right?
Sometimes it doesn’t work. I play BF3 and BF4 while listening to a podcast so I use the browser extension to connect to the US for the podcast. I tried split tunnelling and it kicks me out of the game despite excluding the game and punkbuster.
I don’t think there is any. But the browser extension only works when you’re using the browser. If you’re doing email and other stuff all your traffic isn’t being secret tunneled if you’re not using the desktop app
