Would I just need the wire guard app on Android, and then I’d set it up on my router? Do I need anything else? Apologies if this is a stupid question. Thank you!
Tailscale or PiVPN - https://www.pivpn.io/
Wireguard on my OpenWRT router has been great for me. I can access everything on my phone like my home cameras and pihole blocking is the cherry on top.
I think wireguard is the best in this case. Fast, secure, simple and minimal overhead.
Pivpn via wire guard is dumb easy. I’m a complete noob and did it in a half hour.
Install PiVPN on your Pi-hole: https://www.pivpn.io/
Then you can setup a client config (OpenVPN or Wireguard - whichever way you bend) and have your phone create a VPN connection which will then use your Pi-hole DNS as resolvers… voila, Pi-hole on your mobile when you’re out and about. Take your ad-blocking with you.
Next level: setup Tasker to trigger auto connect/disconnect when you leave home/return home to your wifi and you’ll never have to think about it.
Boom.
I use PiVPN and wireguard on my phone. For the cherry on top , I use a Tasker script on my phone to automatically turn on wireguard when I am not home.
I think “best way” is subjective, and depends a bit on your setup and what you want to achieve. I use OpenVPN on my router and it works great for my purposes. I can use the app on my phone or on PC. Others prefer WireGuard or Tailscale. If your router doesn’t support the one you want you could always run PiVPN instead and do it that way.
Tailscale or WireGuard
Pihole + Unbound + PiVPN (install WireGuard). Use WireGuard on mobile.
I am using zerotier to glue all of my devices together
change the router to an ubiquiti dream machine like I did. has build-in l2tp, openvpn or wireguard server. super easy to setup. cost more for the router they will last for years.
Due to Reddit’s recent API changes I have decided to switch to Lemmy
I use a Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine as my home router and the built-in VPN capability it has so that I can leverage the PiHole benefits and access home resources.
PiHole + PiVPN (Wireguard) works fantastic in old RPIs.
PiVPN is the best way in my opinion and seems that many others here are saying same think. It is easy to configure, convenient and you’ll be set up within 15 minutes. You can install Wireguard (preferred) or OpenVPN, or if you want both, run installer twice over with the option you didn’t select first time around when running installer.
I’ve even made an iOS Shortcut for adding and removing users on the Wireguard side of things.
Tailscale, Zerotier would be my choice. Easy to config and secure.
I have OpenVPN set on my router and OpenVPN app on my phone with DNS set to Pihole IP.
Works perfectly.
If you just need to access LAN devices or just want to get your pihole blocking while outside I would advice to use Wireguard and go Unbound. In a nutshell unbound is having only dns querries handled by PiHole (so blocking just like at home) while having access to local ip addresses but your real traffic doesn’t have to go to your pihole so it’ll be faster than a full VPN. Especially useful if you only have a wifi or weaker device running the vpn
Before trying anything, make sure your isp assigns you static ip. Choose the method accordingly.
