What’s the point of using Dashlane on Apple devices?

Hi,
I don’t want to be that person, I really just don’t understand:

All my devices are from Apple, so I just use apples own password manager. Is there any reason in this case to switch to dashlane? What are the advantages?

If you’re using only Apple Product then you don’t really need a different PM. Cross Platform is the key reason I use Dashlane. If you’re considering moving out of Apple’s Ecosystem then you can switch over.

I’ve been using Macs since about 2007, and have been using Dashlane for about 2-3 years now. Why? I don’t really care for keychain, and I use it to remember my passwords at work also, where I’m on Windows 11.

Dashlane also “just works” - I haven’t had any issues with it. I used to use 1Password, and it was ok, but it had issues now and then with being able to automate changing passwords. I haven’t had that issue with Dashlane.

It’s been awhile since I’ve played around with keychian, etc. but the question is similar to “Why would I choose Dashlane over X password manager”. Some points though for Apple specifically:

  • Dashlane is cross-platform, you may have Apple devices now but that may not always be the case & you might find issues with vendor lock-in
  • Dashlane has updates rolling out weekly - that may not be the case if features are tied to OS releases, etc.
  • Dashlane works on all major browsers (I believe iCloud Keychain is available on Chrome now, but it is early days)

More generally on why users might prefer Dashlane over other options:

  • Our autofill engine is one the best on the market, and we’re constantly improving it based on user feedback & reports! So all your credentials, 2FA codes, personal info, etc. will be quickly and accurately filled in on websites
  • Our UX/UI is (hopefully!) friendly & easy to use, anecdotally I’ve gotten my 67 year old father set up & he’s changed all of their passwords to more secure generated ones on his own
  • Features such as Dark Web Monitoring, our VPN partnership, and phishing detection give users peace of mind on their account securities & digital data/privacy

That being said everyone has different situations, preferences, and requirements for password management! If iCloud Password / Keychain is best suited for your situation then it might make the most sense for you to use it, at the end of the day the main goal is just to ensure your passwords & data are securely stored and protected.

havent used apple in a while but i suspect you are talking about keychain…

if you are happy about being wallgardenend and only need the service to store passwords then you might not need a 3rd party pm.

but keychain used to be quite rudementary in its offering unless that’s changed. you weren’t able to add additional information such as notes and the likes to password entries for example. you also couldnt store personal information, ids, credit cards (though browsers offer this feature).

also not sure how far ahead they are on offering passkeys as an option.

personally i always hated keychain because as all things apple i did not feel “in control” of my data. good ole tim knew best how i should use and access my stuff. but if all you want is to “save and forget” then its a good option.

Unless I’m wrong, you can’t use the keychain on non-apple browsers. But your question is a good reminder for me to look into how keychain works these days. Maybe I could save the money.

I’m already using Dashlane and, like you said, I’m beginning to wonder why I’d stick with it. The only thing I’d really be missing would be the VPN, which I don’t use much anyhow. Once this subscription is up, I’m likely out. If they prorated, I’d leave sooner.

Am I the only one having Auto fill issues on my iPhone? You have to search for credentials in vault when logging in an iOS app. Other password managers suggest the credentials

Off-topic: Why does Dashlane block features when my phone is jailbroken? I can’t use TouchID for example

Our autofill engine is one the best on the market

yes it is.

wish we could say the same thing about sync though

I can try to find more specific info, as far as I know we don’t do anything specific for checking jailbroken devices, but the device itself might limit certain features such as secure enclave stuff (used by things like TouchID) as the authenticity/confidence of their security is reduced on jailbroken devices.
