What is the best protocol to use for iOS?

Im a total tech noob, new to Nord VPN. But Ive heard Apple is a little different with VPNs, also heard it depends on your router and mine is totally xfinity standard. Any suggestions on the best set up? My computer is also a Mac. Im not torrenting or anything like that, just like my privacy so I figured I’d try it out. Everyone had good things to say about Nord (aside from the data breach, which if I understand correctly happened a while ago). Any feedback appreciated

I’ve been using ‘recommended.’ So far, Nord is fantastic. Occasionally I’ll have a slight connectivity issue and auto connect has a hiccup. I just toggle airplane mode on and off to reset the tower I’m on and all is usually good after that. I haven’t noticed that happening on any WiFi networks.

By going off Nord’s official statements and communication online - NordLynx seems to be performing the best and that’s the case for me. A bit of experience with VPNs has shown me that there’s no one winning combination for all networks though, so you may want to A, B test the available options to find what’s best for your situation

They have a good blog about it. It honestly depends on your needs. What’s your regular type of activity if you don’t mind me asking?

Yea every once in a while I notice the same thing

Also ive noticed in iOS, in settings menu sometimes it says “Connected” (under cellular) or it shows As CONNECTED by a switch or button like everything else. Its the weirdest thing, why can’t it just be consistent.

Thanks Ill check that out. Nothing really. Just like the idea of extra security.

For your iPhone IKEv2 is fine for everyday use. It should be able to bypass any restrictions and firewalls IF you ever need to. If you can’t then switch to OpenVPN (UDP). As for your computer, since it’s a Mac get the OpenVPN version of the app and not the Mac App Store IKEv2 version. Why? Because with the OpenVPN there’s more features and can bypass more things if you ever need to and don’t wanna switch back and forth apps so just stick to the OpenVPN version only. What if I really just want a VPN not so much to bypass anything (im a noob but from what I understand a proxy config can accomplish that) but just to kinda stay hidden, away from hack jobs and those sorts of things. Xfinity is my provider and they have the absolute worst tech support, customer support in general. I just got a VPN to stay generally protected. But I also hear that it can make matters worse if you dont know what you’re doing

Okay, so when using a VPN it makes proxies obsolete while it’s active. You don’t need the two running at once. Proxies are good for applications that just want to bypass restrictions and not worry about privacy.

For example, if you live in Slovenia (which recently allowed Spotify) you wouldn’t have access to all music rights and catalogue. In this case a proxy within the app to let’s say the US or UK would allow you to get more access to music or unblocking telegram in Iran. No one will come after you for the data being sent out with that proxy. Even though it changed your location there’s somewhat a form of encryption within the app such as SSL. Torrents however, aren’t encrypted so the data will be visible even with a proxy.

VPNs on the other hand will provide bypassing, security, anonymity (to certain degree), high encryption and no logs (with NordVPN). This will protect ALL traffic that’s being sent and received through your devices. Xfinity won’t see anything you do with a VPN but can see with a proxy. There’s no real downfall or side effect to having a VPN.
