I switched ISPs this last month and while our speeds are PHENOMENAL, I am dealing with packet loss and the resulting lag from it. I am wanting to avoid a VPN if possible, unless the VPN has a free trial. Haven’t gotten paid yet and I don’t trust free VPNs. If there’s something I can physically do, or something I can have my ISP do, I’d be happy to do that.
Edit: I ended up getting a VPN. Partner didn’t like I was frustrated about it and got me NordVPN cause that’s what they use for their games. Problem is solved it seems. My ping only increased by 0.02ms
There is a bad node that is used when routing data right now. It’s third party from SE so they can’t go and fix it sadly, so the only way around it is using a VPN to reroute around the node
Thank you for your cooperation as we look into the recent network delays and/or packet loss experienced by some users playing on the North American data centers.
While our investigation is still ongoing, we’ve been able to confirm that the issues are caused by a network connection somewhere between our servers and those affected, rather than the FFXIV servers or equipment themselves.
At this time, we’ve forwarded a request to the relevant network carrier to locate the root of the issues; however, we believe it may expedite the investigation if those affected were to notify their internet service provider, which we understand some of you have already done. We apologize for making another request of those experiencing the recent network issues, but would be grateful if you could also report the situation to your internet service provider so that they are aware as well.
for what it’s worth, se is actually aware of the issue. they’ve put out posts from community managers, although they are not promising that they can fix it. since it’s a routing issue, it’s out of their hands, outside of trying to talk to the carriers
as other posters have mentioned, you can use vpns to get around this issue for now, but hopefully the communication with se and the carriers will be able to fix the issue without the users having to work around it
VPN can work if you find a server that gives you a good route. I’ve been using 1.1.1.1 which is…kind of like a VPN? Idk all I know is that my ping is actually BETTER than it was before all the packet lose stuff started happening. It’s also free.
This is an old post, but it still links to an active way to show you how to run a tracert to the NA servers, and give them feedback, so they can try to reach out to where the problem is to get fixed. I have AT&T and live near Texas. In the morning I get a timeout at step 4. After noon I will get 3-4 timeouts. I am now using a vpn routing up to St Louis. It’s not good, but it’s better than game freezing for 3-15 seconds at a time.
Ive done my report for them so they have where I was losing my packets. But in the meantime, the NordVPN I got is doing amazing. I had a ping of 12ms and now I’m at 15ms. So I’m not worried at all
alex and noclippy don’t prevent packet loss. i use alex myself. it’s got very little to do with the ping. i can have the same or even worse ping and i could have a comfy rubberband-free raiding experience one moment, and then for a couple of hours, experience awful rubberbanding. using mudfish vpn made the rubberbanding go away most of the time
if i’m seeing this right, it’s the san jose node from ntt that’s the cause of most of the packet loss problems that crop up. i don’t know why, but sometimes i have to connect to a jp node to bypass it and other times i have to connect to a us west node
Damn that’s a necro comment if I ever saw one. Idk I don’t use vpns but also that bad node was fixed months ago so if you are still having issues it’s something else. Most likely the recent ddos attacks that have affected everyone
