VPN Plus Server on RT2600ac router - advice needed

I have just recently installed a RT2600ac router, which has SRM 1.2.5-8227 Update 5. I have my firewall setup and Threat Prevention on and working and I am now wondering about the VPN Plus Server.

If I am honest, I am not sure I truly understand the VPN in this context, should I set it up, and if so what functionality will it give me? I have read it will enable me to dial back to my home network via the VPN and this is more secure. I am not sure I understand.

I don’t do a lot out of the house in recently times, my phones use Synology Photos which back up to my NAS. I don’t really need to access media away from the house, although maybe at some point. I have other family members too, so they would need to use the VPN.

I have quick connect set-up on on router and NAS.

Should I install VPN Plus Server, and what will it give me?

I also have a protonVPN subscription, although I am not sure that is relevant.

Thanks for reading!

I have the same Router and multiple NAS units. VPN+ is an excellent package. I have set up SSL VPN, L2TP, and OpenVPN. There is a learning curve and you will have to export configurations to your other devices to access OpenVPN.

Any of those VPN options will allow you to access your network securely from anywhere in the world. All of the traffic between your remote devices and your network will be encrypted and secure.

This would be more secure than QuickConnect, but QuickConnect is really pretty secure. It is a question of living with a bit more complexity to get a bit more security. If all you are doing is sharing media it might not be worth it.

I run a small business that deals with sensitive information that has to be accessed from all over the world. For me, hosting a VPN on my router is a necessity.

If you want to fiddle with it and get it to work, a VPN is a best practice, but if you just run QuickConnect, use HTTPS, enforce strong passwords and 2FA, you may have enough security for your use case.

Thank you for taking the time to post such a detailed reply.
